6 Tips You Can Use To Make Your Auto Insurance More Affordable

Auto insurance is necessary for people to drive legally, but it can be a large expense. Finding ways to reduce the price of your policy can be helpful. Here are six tips you can use to make your auto insurance more affordable.

1. Seek Active Discounts

One of the most effective ways to access affordable auto insurance is to seek active discounts. Active discounts are programs or offers related to actions drivers can take to be safer or more vigilant. Common discount programs include defensive driving courses, the installation of anti-theft devices, vehicle tracking and good driver discounts. Some providers also offer discounts to good students, people who park in their garages and multi-car households.

2. Compare Quotes

Before deciding on a car insurance provider, compare quotes from at least three companies. Consider the overall price, the provider's financial strength and creditworthiness, the overall coverage and whether the coverage meets your specific needs. You should also compare any discounts or special offers each provider might include. Some people also choose to speak with representatives of each potential provider before making any decisions.

3. Increase Your Policy's Deductibles

Increasing your deductible can be a good option for reducing the size of your monthly insurance bill. However, it does mean your out-of-pocket expenses will be higher if you're in an accident or your car is damaged. You should keep that in mind when considering this option. Discuss the viability of increasing your deductibles with your insurance agent. He or she should be able to help you decide whether it's a good decision for you.

4. Drive Cars With High Safety Ratings and Low Repair Costs

The safer your vehicle, the lower your insurance premium is likely to be. Look for cars that have high safety ratings. Research how much the make and model you're interested in typically costs to repair and how likely it is to be stolen or broken into. Check its safety rating and review what safety features are included. Cars that have lower repair costs and higher safety ratings tend to be the least expensive to insure.

5. Meet With Your Insurance Agent

Simply speaking with your insurance agent can help you make your auto insurance more affordable. He or she can introduce you to various cost-saving programs and measures you may not have been aware of. Your insurance agent will be aware of new promotions your provider is offering any discounts or programs you may be eligible for but not already aware of. For example, your employer may be partnered with your insurance provider, which might mean a discount is available to you. He or she can also provide you with information about alternative cost-lowering options, such as pay-as-you-go coverage, bundled coverage, vehicle downsizing and removing optional coverage from your policy.

6. Improve Your Credit Score

Your credit score and history can affect more than just your loan eligibility. They can also provide you with discounts on insurance rates. This is because your insurance provider can use your credit score to predict your likelihood of filing a claim. People with lower scores tend to be more likely to file insurance claims while those with high scores are less likely to do so. This means the higher your score is, the lower your premium may be.

It's a good idea to periodically review your policy. Your premium may change over time or it may go up if you've recently been in a car accident or received a driving or parking ticket. Checking your policy regularly can help ensure you're paying an appropriate premium and can make adjustments if it's too high.
