The Environmental Protection Agency has been devoted to lowering the amount emissions by diesel trucks. It has instituted numerous policies aimed at making the diesel truck more eco-friendly. The 95 percent improvement can be attributed to tougher legislation created by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The reduction lowered the maximum allowable diesel exhaust, a major contributor of smog and other potential health problems for those living in certain areas.

Diesel trucks will adhere to even stricter policies to take effect in 2014. Trucks will be required to lower their emissions from 129,000 to 738,00 tons of particular matter each year. The changes have had quite the impact on the logistics industry and has changed the way automakers manufacture the vehicles. Many of the newer models can cover significant ground releasing a fraction of the fumes required when compared to their predecessors manufactured decades ago. Changes to the design of these large trucks may have a far greater impact on industrial communities.

Why is this development important? Studies show that pollution can contribute to certain conditions like asthma. In some areas, the asthma rate can be as much as four times the national average. The fumes can exacerbate asthma. Poor air quality is attributed to the volume of emissions produced by heavy equipment and diesel trucks.
