The 2023 Hyundai Sonata: A Sensuous and Sporty Sedan That Stands Out

Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata has always been a reliable and affordable choice for midsize sedan buyers, but it never really stood out from the crowd. That changed with the launch of the eighth-generation Sonata in 2019, which introduced a stunning new design language and cutting-edge technology features. Now, Hyundai has revealed the 2023 Sonata, which takes the sedan's sportiness and sophistication to a whole new level.

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata is more than just a facelift. It's a complete makeover that transforms the Sonata's image from a conservative family car to a dynamic, progressive, and futuristic four-door coupe. The new Sonata embodies Hyundai's "Sensuous Sportiness" design philosophy, which aims to create emotional value and desirability through harmonious proportions, sleek lines, and eye-catching details.

The new Sonata's exterior design is based on the N Line trim, the sportiest and most powerful sedan version. The Hyundai Sonata N Line features a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and paddle shifters. The N Line also comes with a sport-tuned suspension, steering, and brakes, as well as exclusive styling elements such as a black mesh grille, side skirts, rear diffuser, and dual twin-tip exhaust.

The new Sonata's front end is dominated by a wide grille that integrates Hyundai's signature Seamless Horizon Lamp, which consists of hidden headlamps that light up when the car is turned on. The headlamps create a dramatic lighting effect that emphasizes the car's wide stance and futuristic appeal. The grille also incorporates an air intake that enhances the car's aerodynamics and cooling performance.

The new Sonata's side profile showcases its low-slung, elegant proportions and fastback roofline, giving it a coupe-like silhouette. The black garnish along the bottom of the body rises towards the rear, creating a strong character line that adds dynamism and movement to the design. The 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels complement the car's sporty attitude.

The new Sonata's rear end features a sleek spoiler-shaped trunk lid that improves the car's aerodynamics and stability. The H-shaped taillights are connected by a thin LED strip that runs across the width of the car, creating a distinctive signature at night. The rear bumper also incorporates a muffler-shaped garnish that mimics the N Line's dual exhaust tips.

The new Hyundai Sonata's interior design reflects its exterior theme of sportiness and sophistication. The cabin is spacious and comfortable, with ample headroom, legroom, and trunk space. The seats are upholstered in leatherette and microsuede, with optional leather seats for the Limited trim. The driver's seat offers a 10-way power adjustment with lumbar support, while the front passenger seat offers a six-way power adjustment.

The new Sonata's dashboard is dominated by a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster that displays various driving information and modes. The cluster is paired with an 8- or 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging, and navigation. The infotainment system also features Hyundai's SmartSense suite of advanced safety and driver assistance features, such as forward collision avoidance assist, blind spot collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, rear cross traffic collision avoidance assist, safe exit warning, driver attention warning, and highway driving assist.

The new Sonata also offers some unique and innovative technology features that set it apart from its rivals. One of them is Hyundai Digital Key, which allows drivers to use their smartphone as a key to unlock, start and drive the car. Another one is Remote Smart Parking Assist, which allows drivers to park or unpark the car remotely using their smartphone or key fob.

The new Hyundai Sonata is expected to go on sale soon, with prices starting from $25,100 for the base SE trim and going up to $35,125 for the top-of-the-line N Line trim. The new Sonata also offers a hybrid variant that uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to produce a combined output of 195 horsepower and achieve an EPA-estimated 51 mpg on the highway.

The new Hyundai Sonata is not just another midsize sedan. It's a bold statement of Hyundai's vision for the future of mobility. It's a car that redefines what a midsize sedan can be: sporty, sophisticated, futuristic, and fun to drive.
