Tesla car leasing deals: what to compare before leasing a Tesla

Tesla car leasing deals: what to compare before leasing a Tesla

Leasing a Tesla can give you access to an electric car with quick performance, a minimalist interior and convenient charging options. However, the lowest monthly rental is not automatically the best agreement for your budget or driving habits.

When comparing  Tesla car leasing deals, you should look at the model, battery and drivetrain alongside the initial rental, contract length and mileage allowance. You also need to consider charging access, insurance and whether the car provides enough passenger and luggage space.

First Vehicle Finance currently lists the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, subject to stock and funder availability. The Model 3 is a lower saloon, while the Model Y has a higher seating position and more flexible luggage access.

Almost 500,000 new battery-electric cars were registered in the UK during 2025, representing close to 1 in 4 new registrations. The Model Y was the country’s most registered battery-electric model that year, while the Model 3 was also among the leading electric cars.

Compare the Model 3 and Model Y

The Model 3 may suit you if you want an efficient electric car for commuting, business travel or motorway journeys. The Model Y may be more practical if you regularly carry children, dogs, shopping or holiday luggage.

Before choosing, compare:

  • Passenger space: Check rear legroom and headroom.
  • Boot access: Consider the opening shape as well as capacity.
  • Dimensions: Make sure the car fits your driveway and usual parking spaces.
  • Driving position: Decide whether you prefer a saloon or SUV.
  • Total cost: Compare models using identical contract terms.

A test drive is worthwhile because the touchscreen controls and regenerative braking may feel different from your current car.

Choose the right version

Tesla models may be offered in rear-wheel-drive, long-range and higher-performance versions. Availability can change, so check the exact vehicle shown on your quotation.

A rear-wheel-drive version may be sufficient if you mainly commute and make occasional longer journeys. A long-range version may be more suitable if you regularly travel substantial distances or have limited charging access.

A performance model offers quicker acceleration, but it may also bring a higher monthly rental, insurance premium and tyre cost. An upgrade costing £80 more per month would add £3,840 over a 48-month agreement, before any difference in the initial rental.

Look beyond the official range

Official WLTP range figures help you compare electric cars, but they do not guarantee the distance you will achieve on every charge.

Real-world range can be affected by cold weather, motorway speeds, driving style, passenger weight and wheel choice. Start with your longest regular journey rather than your average daily mileage.

If you normally drive 30 miles a day but cover 250 miles several times a month, check the charging options on those longer routes. You may not need the longest-range version if you can charge reliably at home, but the cheapest version may become inconvenient if your journeys require frequent stops.

Plan how you will charge

Home charging is often the most convenient option. Before leasing, confirm that you have suitable off-street parking and obtain an installation quotation.

The price will depend on the charger, cable route, electrical work and property layout. Do not assume installation is included unless this is clearly stated in the agreement.

If you cannot charge at home, research public chargers near your home, workplace and regular destinations. Compare charging speed, reliability, parking restrictions and payment arrangements.

Tesla drivers can use compatible Superchargers and other suitable UK public charging networks. Charging prices vary, so include regular rapid charging in your budget.

Compare the complete leasing cost

A low monthly rental may be based on a large initial rental, low annual mileage or long contract. Compare quotations using the same structure.

Review:

  • Initial rental: This is an upfront payment and does not create ownership.
  • Monthly rentals: Multiply them across the full agreement.
  • Contract length: Common terms may include 24, 36 or 48 months.
  • Mileage allowance: Base this on your realistic annual use.
  • Excess mileage: Check the charge for each mile above the allowance.
  • Maintenance: Confirm what is included and excluded.

For example, a £399 monthly rental with a 9-month initial rental requires £3,591 upfront. This differs from a £420 monthly rental with a 3-month initial rental of £1,260. Compare the total payable rather than selecting the smallest monthly figure.

Check your current vehicle’s MOT history or service records before selecting mileage. Include commuting, business journeys, weekends and holidays. A low allowance can reduce the monthly rental, but excess mileage charges may apply when the car is returned.

Check insurance, tyres and technology

Insurance can vary according to your age, address, driving history and selected version. Obtain quotations for the exact model before signing the lease.

A performance version that appears affordable based on its monthly rental may become less suitable once insurance and tyre costs are included. Vehicle weight and strong acceleration can also contribute to tyre wear.

Tesla places many controls within the central touchscreen. Check whether you are comfortable using screen menus, managing charging through an app and relying on phone-based access.

An assistance feature does not make the car autonomous. You remain responsible for controlling the vehicle and following UK road laws.

Understand what happens at the end

With Personal Contract Hire or Business Contract Hire, you normally return the vehicle at the end rather than owning it.

Its mileage and condition will be assessed. Fair wear and tear is acceptable, but impact damage, neglect or poor repairs may lead to charges. Missing keys, charging cables or other supplied equipment may also result in costs.

Request the relevant BVRLA Fair Wear and Tear guidance and inspect the car before collection. This gives you time to address damage that may fall outside the accepted standard.

First Vehicle Finance Limited is a credit broker, not a lender. Personal leasing is generally arranged through Personal Contract Hire, while eligible business customers may use Business Contract Hire. Finance is subject to status and lender criteria, and credit checks may affect your credit score. Business users should obtain independent tax advice where appropriate.

Compare your next Tesla with First Vehicle Finance

The right agreement should match your journeys, charging access, space requirements and overall budget. Compare the complete contract rather than focusing only on acceleration, official range or the headline monthly rental.

Speak to First Vehicle Finance to explore available Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, mileage allowances, contract terms and maintenance choices. The team can help you structure a personal or business lease around the way you intend to use your Tesla.
