The New MINI John Cooper Works Countryman: A Crossover with a Turbocharged Engine

The New MINI John Cooper Works Countryman: A Crossover with a Turbocharged Engine

The MINI brand is known for its iconic design, agile handling, and fun-to-drive character. But what if you want more space, versatility, and performance from your MINI? That’s where the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman comes in. This crossover combines the best of both worlds: a compact SUV's spaciousness and practicality and the hot hatch's power and sportiness. Let’s look closer at what makes this model stand out from the crowd.

A Turbocharged Engine with 312 Horsepower

The heart of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with TwinPower Turbo technology. This engine delivers an impressive 312 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful engine ever fitted to a MINI. It can propel the crossover from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph. The engine is paired with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission, which offers quick and smooth shifts and paddle shifters for manual control. The transmission also features a launch control function, which optimizes the acceleration from a standstill.

An All-Wheel Drive System with Enhanced Traction and Stability

The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman comes standard with the ALL4 all-wheel drive system, which distributes the power between the front and rear wheels according to the driving situation. This ensures optimal traction and stability on any road surface and in any weather condition. The system also enhances the handling and agility of the crossover, especially in corners and curves. The driver can choose between three driving modes: Sport, Mid, and Green, which adjust the engine, transmission, steering, and suspension settings to suit different preferences and situations. The Sport mode offers the most dynamic and responsive driving experience, while the Green mode focuses on efficiency and comfort.

A Sporty and Aerodynamic Design

The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is not only powerful but also stylish. It features a sporty and aerodynamic design, with distinctive elements highlighting its performance-oriented character. The front fascia features a hexagonal grille with a red crossbar, a John Cooper Works logo, large air intakes, and LED headlights with a horizontal bar motif. The side profile showcases the muscular wheel arches, the roof rails, and the contrasting roof and mirror caps. The rear end features a roof spoiler, a diffuser, and a quad exhaust system. The crossover rides on 19-inch or 20-inch light alloy wheels, which are aerodynamically optimized and fitted with high-performance tires.

A Premium and Spacious Interior

The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman offers a premium and spacious interior with high-quality materials and advanced technology. The cabin can accommodate up to five passengers, with ample headroom and legroom and a generous cargo space of up to 51.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. The seats are upholstered in leather and feature a red and black color scheme, as well as John Cooper Works logos and stitching. The seats are also heated and electrically adjustable, with a memory function for the driver. The dashboard features a minimalist and modern design, with a 10.25-inch touchscreen display that supports Apple CarPlay and wireless charging. The display also shows the performance data, such as the boost pressure, the oil temperature, and the g-force. The crossover also features a digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, and a Harman Kardon sound system.

A Range of Safety and Driver Assistance Features

The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is equipped with a range of safety and driver assistance features, which enhance the protection and convenience of the driver and the passengers. Some of these features include:

  • Adaptive cruise control, which maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and adjusts the speed according to the traffic flow.
  • Lane departure warning, which alerts the driver if the vehicle drifts out of the lane without signaling.
  • Lane keeping assist, which gently steers the vehicle back into the lane if the driver does not react to the warning.
  • Front collision warning, which warns the driver of a potential collision with a vehicle, a pedestrian, or a cyclist, and applies the brakes if necessary.
  • Parking assistant, which helps the driver find and maneuver into a suitable parking space.
  • A rearview camera, which shows the area behind the vehicle on the touchscreen display, with dynamic guidelines and a zoom function.
  • Surround view camera, which shows a 360-degree view of the vehicle and its surroundings on the touchscreen display, with different perspectives and modes.

A Comparison with Similar SUVs

The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is a unique and attractive crossover, but how does it compare with some of its competitors in the same segment? Here is a table that shows some of the key features and specifications of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman and three of its rivals: the Audi Q3, the BMW X1, and the Mercedes-Benz GLA.

As you can see, the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman has the highest horsepower, torque, and top speed among the four models, the highest starting price, and the lowest cargo space. The Audi Q3 and the BMW X1 have similar performance and fuel economy, but the BMW X1 has more cargo space and a lower starting price. The Mercedes-Benz GLA has the lowest horsepower and torque but also the best fuel economy and a lower starting price than the MINI and the Audi.

The Bottom Line

The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is a powerful and stylish crossover that offers a spacious and premium interior, a sporty and aerodynamic design, and a range of safety and driver assistance features. It is the most powerful and fastest model in the MINI lineup, delivering a thrilling and engaging driving experience. However, it is also the most expensive model in the MINI lineup and has less cargo space than some of its competitors. If you are looking for a crossover that combines practicality and performance, and you don’t mind paying a premium, the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman might be the right choice.
