Renault unveils the Megane E-TECH Electric, a small electric car

Renault Megane E-TECH Electric

Renault has introduced the Megane E-TECH Electric car. According to the french manufacturer, the first model on the new CMF-EV e-car platform has a range of up to 470 kilometers and the capacity to charge bi-directionally. Sales are scheduled to begin in March 2022.

The new Renault Megane Electric car embodies Renault's "Nouvelle Vague" (New Wave), a product counterattack that will establish standards in the electric car industry with its overabundance of innovations. "Unlike its battery-electric predecessors, the Renault Megane E-TECH Electric views itself as part of a wider electrical ecosystem," stated the French car manufacturer.

The Renault Megane E-TECH Electric meets bidirectional charging standards and can send power back into the grid using "Vehicle-to-Grid Technology" (V2G). "The Megane E-TECH Electric also fits seamlessly into the digital environment of its user, thanks to the new OpenR display in the interior and the new OpenR Link multimedia platform based on Android Automotive OS, which was developed in partnership with Google."

The new Renault Megane E-TECH Electric car has small overhangs and a long wheelbase of 2.70 meters, resulting in a total length of 4.21 meters. Despite the battery on the vehicle floor, the small electric car is just slightly taller than the present Renault Megane with a combustion engine at 1.5 meters. However, Renault says that the revised dimensions would create the foundation for exceptional space.

The Renault Megane Electric combines a high level of comfort with agile driving characteristics. The CMF-EV platform is combined with a new, specifically developed power steering system for this purpose. A multi-link rear axle also ensures accurate wheel control. The new Renault Megane E-TECH Electric car has a lower center of gravity than the combustion Megane since it has the slimmest battery on the market, with a height of only eleven millimeters. Furthermore, the battery occupies nearly all of the area within the wheelbase, resulting in equal weight distribution.

Renault offers the new Megane E-TECH Electric in two drivetrain configurations: 96 kW/130 hp and 160 kW/218 hp. With top motorization, the three-phase synchronous motors with 218 hp and 300 Nm enables acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.4 seconds. A top speed of 160 km/h is possible. According to Renault, the Megane E-TECH Electric's excellent efficiency helps the regenerative braking technique for recovering electrical energy when decelerating and braking. The driver can select one of four stages of recovery.

The Megane E-TECH Electric's power storage is a lithium-ion battery. The battery pack, like the electric motor, is liquid-cooled. Renault provides the battery in two capacities: 40 kWh for a range of 300 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle and 60 kWh for a range of 470 kilometers.

With the new liquid cooling technology, a newly designed energy recovery system may utilize excess heat from the motor and the battery to heat the passenger compartment without using the battery. As a result, even at low temperatures, the range should be less compromised. In the Megane E-TECH Electric, Renault also employs a more efficient heat pump. When the vehicle approaches a designated charging station, predictive charge management heats the battery to the temperature necessary for rapid or complete charging. Again, it takes advantage of the navigation system's data.
