Audi Adds Gaming to the Dashboard: AirConsole Brings In-Car Entertainment to Life

Audi AirConsole integration

Audi Targets Screen Time with AirConsole Integration

Audi’s strategy is shifting toward digital engagement. With the launch of AirConsole in select models, Audi turns its infotainment system into a gaming platform—no external controllers, no new hardware.

Passengers scan a QR code, link their smartphones, and start playing. This rollout expands Audi’s push into software-defined vehicles, where digital content drives customer retention and added value.

How It Works: No Controllers, No Delay

Passengers launch AirConsole through the Audi MMI infotainment display or the MMI passenger screen. A QR code links a passenger’s smartphone to the vehicle. The phone becomes the game controller.

No extra apps. No login delays.

This simplicity reduces user friction—a key principle in modern in-car tech. All you need is:

  • A compatible Audi model
  • A myAudi account
  • A data connection (included with monthly data volume)
  • An Android-based infotainment system with access to the Audi Application Store

Supported Models as of June 2025

Only models with the latest infotainment architecture are compatible:

  • Audi A5
  • Audi Q5
  • Audi A6
  • Audi A6 e-tron
  • Audi Q6 e-tron

These vehicles feature Android-based systems, enabling access to third-party apps through the Audi Application Store.

Available Games: Social, Simple, Accessible

AirConsole offers a growing lineup of party-style games for multiple players. The interface and controller setup are designed for all ages.

Game Highlights:

  • UNO Car Party! – Classic card chaos reworked for car screens.
  • Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? – Fast trivia rounds for group play.
  • Pictionary Car Party – A 40th anniversary update, exclusive to Audi until December 2025.

These aren’t console-level games. They’re designed for quick play, perfect for traffic delays, road trip breaks, or waiting in parking lots.

Audi plans to expand the catalog and has hinted at more exclusive content partnerships, likely modeled after the current Mattel agreement.

Moving Gameplay to the Passenger Side

Vehicles with an MMI passenger display can allow gaming even while the car is in motion. Audi’s dynamic privacy mode blocks gameplay visuals from the driver’s view while allowing the passenger screen to stay active.

This feature balances entertainment and safety:

  • Driver sees nothing distracting
  • Passenger plays without restriction
  • Games auto-disable from the center screen while driving

No headset. No external device. No driver interference.

Audi Application Store: Bigger Than Gaming

AirConsole is part of a larger push by Audi to own the digital in-car experience. The Audi Application Store includes:

  • Spotify
  • YouTube
  • DAZN
  • Articly News Portal

Games are just one layer. The real asset is the infrastructure:

  • OTA (over-the-air) updates
  • Subscription options
  • Data usage tracking

With this architecture, Audi can push new content, limit regional availability, and tailor in-car services based on driver profiles.

What’s Required to Use It?

Here’s what users need:

ComponentDescription
MMI Infotainment SystemMust be Android-based, includes app store access
myAudi AccountRequired to access and sync digital features
Data PlanMonthly volume included; needed for streaming and gaming
Smartphone (Controller)Connects via QR code; no app download needed
Compatible ModelLimited to A5, Q5, A6, A6 e-tron, Q6 e-tron series

This setup keeps the barrier to entry low—users already have everything they need.

Market Positioning: Where Audi Fits in In-Car Gaming

Audi isn’t trying to replicate console gaming or compete with smartphones. It’s targeting dead time in the car—commutes, pick-up waits, EV charging sessions.

Comparison: Audi vs. Tesla vs. BMW

FeatureAudi (AirConsole)Tesla (Tesla Arcade)BMW (Theatre Screen)

Driver Distraction ControlDynamic privacy modeScreen disabled while drivingOnly active in rear
Software SourceAudi App StoreProprietary OSBMW OS + Amazon Fire TV
MonetizationLinked to app storeBundled in softwareTied to infotainment tiers

Audi is following a low-infrastructure, high-engagement model. No console-grade hardware. No added complexity. Just repurposing tech that’s already there.

Why This Matters for Audi

This move aligns with three long-term Audi goals:

  1. Grow digital revenue via app purchases and subscriptions.
  2. Boost customer satisfaction with high-utility features.
  3. Build an ecosystem that retains users post-sale.

As cars become connected devices, AirConsole becomes a blueprint. It doesn’t require production-line changes. It scales easily. It keeps Audi competitive with tech-forward rivals.

Revenue Implications: Monetizing the Cabin

Audi isn’t selling games—yet. But every data interaction, every app launch, and every in-car minute has revenue potential.

Opportunities:

  • Subscription bundles with exclusive games.
  • In-app purchases tied to Audi user accounts.
  • Data packages priced by usage tier.

This aligns with industry shifts from vehicle margin to lifetime customer value.

Future Outlook

Expect Audi to:

  • Expand AirConsole access to additional models by early 2026.
  • Add more exclusive content through new IP partnerships.
  • Introduce premium tiers for gaming within its app store.

This rollout is a test case. If data shows strong user engagement, Audi could expand to rear-seat screens, tablets, or VR integrations.

Final Takeaway

Audi isn’t playing games. It’s creating a low-cost, high-engagement layer within the in-car experience. The AirConsole integration uses existing tech to deliver new value.

It fits Audi’s strategy:

  • Low hardware requirements
  • High software potential
  • Increased platform control

In a market racing toward digitization, Audi’s approach focuses on practical, scalable, user-driven features. And it’s just getting started.
