The coronavirus pandemic stops car production in factories across Europe

The coronavirus pandemic stops car production in factories across Europe

The health crisis facing Europe in this period is beginning to make an impact on the production of cars. A number of manufacturers have decided to pause the activity in different productive units. Here's how the situation looks at this moment.

The FCA Group (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) has temporarily closed several plants in Europe. The activity is suspended in the Italian production centers in Melfi, Pomigliano, Mirafiori, Grugliasco and Modena, at the factories in Kragujevac (Serbia) and Tychy (Poland), until March 27 at least. Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, Abarth, Lancia and Maserati brands are affected. The group announced that it will take advantage of this pause in production to improve its production processes and quality control.

Ford closed its Spanish plant in Valencia, after three cases of coronavirus infection among employees there. Today, the manufacturer officially announced that it is suspending work at its main production plants in Europe for a few weeks.

The PSA Group stopped working in all plants in Europe, until March 27, after several dozen cases of COVID-19 infection were detected in the factories in Mulhouse and Trémery (France). The Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel and Vauxhall brands are affected by factories in Madrid, Zaragoza, Vigo (Spain), Poissy, Rennes, Sochaux, Mulhouse, Hordain, Trémery (France), Eisenach, Rüsselsheim (Germany), Gliwice ( Poland), Mangualde (Portugal), Ellesmere, Luton (Great Britain) and Trnava (Slovakia).

Renault stopped production at all factories in France, to new orders, depending on the evolution of the situation. These are 12 productive units and about 18,000 employees. The activity of the group in other countries, therefore in Pitești, will be conditioned by the evolution of the situation locally. In Spain, production was also halted.

The Volkswagen group is starting to have problems with the supply of spare parts, the first factories that work at low speed or are even closed being those in Setubal (Portugal), Bratislava (Slovakia) and Martorell and Navara (Spain). If the current situation continues, production is expected to be discontinued soon at the factory at Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters. The launch of the electric model ID.3, scheduled for the summer of this year, could be delayed again.
