The new Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé: The ultimate sports car with four doors

Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé is the latest addition to the AMG GT family and is the most powerful and luxurious yet. This four-door sports car combines the performance and design of the AMG GT two-seater with the comfort and practicality of a four-seater. It is the top of the model portfolio, offering a range of features and options that make it stand out from the crowd.

The design: A blend of elegance and aggression

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé has a distinctive and dynamic appearance, with a long hood, a low roofline, and a muscular rear end. The front fascia features the signature AMG Panamericana grille, flanked by LED high-performance headlamps and large air intakes. The side profile showcases the frameless doors, the flush door handles, and the aerodynamically optimized wheels. The slim LED taillights, the active rear spoiler, and the trapezoidal exhaust tips dominate the rear end.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé is available in two variants: the GT 55 4MATIC+ and the GT 63 S 4MATIC+. The GT 55 4MATIC+ has a chrome-plated diamond grille, silver brake calipers, and 19-inch AMG 10-spoke light-alloy wheels. The GT 63 S 4MATIC+ has a black diamond grille, red brake calipers, and 20-inch AMG cross-spoke forged wheels. Both variants can be customized with a variety of exterior colors, packages, and accessories.

The performance: A masterpiece of engineering

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé is powered by a handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, which delivers different levels of output depending on the variant. The GT 55 4MATIC+ produces 469 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, while the GT 63 S 4MATIC+ produces 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Both variants are equipped with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9-speed transmission, which offers fast and smooth gear changes, and the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, which provides optimal traction and stability.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé also features a number of technologies and systems that enhance the driving dynamics and handling. These include the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT, which allows the driver to choose from six driving modes: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Race, and Individual. The AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL is an adaptive suspension system with active roll stabilization. The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package, which is available for the GT 63 S 4MATIC+, and includes active rear-axle steering, dynamic engine and transmission mounts, and a RACE mode with drift function.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé is capable of reaching impressive speeds and acceleration. The GT 55 4MATIC+ can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 183 mph. The GT 63 S 4MATIC+ can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and has a top speed of 196 mph.

The interior: A fusion of luxury and technology

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé offers a spacious and comfortable interior, with a 2+2 seating configuration and a generous trunk capacity. The seats are upholstered in high-quality leather and have heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The driver and the front passenger also have adjustable lumbar and thigh support. The rear seats can be folded to create more luggage or cargo space.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé also offers a state-of-the-art infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen display. The system features the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), which is a smart and intuitive interface that can be controlled by voice, touch, or gestures. The system also features the AMG TRACK PACE, which is a virtual race engineer that records and analyzes the driving performance on the track. The system also supports wireless charging, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Burmester surround sound system.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé also offers high safety and assistance, with a range of features and systems that help the driver and the passengers. These include the PRE-SAFE, which prepares the vehicle for an imminent collision by tightening the seat belts, closing the windows, and activating the hazard lights. The ATTENTION ASSIST which monitors the driver’s attention and alerts them if they show signs of fatigue or distraction. The Active Brake Assist warns the driver of a potential collision and applies the brakes if necessary. The Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC which maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and adjusts the speed according to the traffic situation. The Active Steering Assist which helps the driver stay in the lane and avoid collisions with other vehicles or pedestrians.

The price: A premium for a premium

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé is not a cheap car, as it reflects the high quality and performance that it offers. The GT 55 4MATIC+ has a starting price of $99,950, while the GT 63 S 4MATIC+ has a starting price of $161,900. These prices do not include the destination charge, taxes, fees, or optional features. The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé is expected to go on sale in the US in early 2024.

The comparison: How does it stack up against the competition?

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé is not the only four-door sports car on the market, as it faces some tough competition from other brands. Here is a comparison table that shows how the GT 55 4MATIC+ and the GT 63 S 4MATIC+ compare to some of their rivals in terms of performance, price, and features.

ModelEngineHorsepowerTorque0-60 mphTop speedPrice
Mercedes-AMG GT 55 4MATIC+4.0-liter V8 biturbo469 hp516 lb-ft3.8 seconds183 mph$99,950
Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+4.0-liter V8 biturbo577 hp590 lb-ft3.1 seconds196 mph$161,900
Porsche Panamera Turbo S4.0-liter V8 biturbo620 hp604 lb-ft2.9 seconds196 mph$177,700
Audi RS 74.0-liter V8 biturbo591 hp590 lb-ft3.5 seconds190 mph$114,000

Aston Martin Rapide AMR6.0-liter V12595 hp465 lb-ft4.2 seconds205 mph$240,000

As the table shows, the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé offers a competitive performance and price compared to its rivals, but it also has some advantages and disadvantages. For example, the GT 55 4MATIC+ is cheaper than the Audi RS 7 and the BMW M8 Gran Coupe, but it is slower and less powerful. The GT 63 S 4MATIC+ is faster and more powerful than the Porsche Panamera Turbo S and the Aston Martin Rapide AMR, but it is also more expensive and less fuel-efficient. The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé also offers some unique features and options that may appeal to some buyers, such as the AMG TRACK PACE, the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package, and the MBUX system.

The verdict: A worthy choice for sports car enthusiasts

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé is a remarkable car that combines the best of both worlds: the performance and design of a sports car and the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It is the top of the model portfolio, offering a range of features and options that make it stand out from the crowd. It is also a competitive car that can challenge and surpass some of its rivals in terms of performance, price, and features. It is a worthy choice for sports car enthusiasts who want a car that can do it all.
