Noticed a new noise from the back of your Volvo when driving on electric power? A damaged bearing in the rear electric motor is one possible cause. But before assuming the motor needs replacing, it helps to pay attention to when the sound appears.
Does it get louder as you speed up, or can you still hear it after parking? These details give the workshop somewhere to start. A noise alone cannot tell you which part needs repairing.

Where the Noise Could Be Coming From
ERAD stands for Electric Rear Axle Drive. The unit has two main parts: an electric motor and a transmission. Calling a sound “ERAD noise” does not yet identify which part is responsible.
Bearings support the moving parts inside the motor. If a bearing becomes damaged, it can make noise as those parts turn. You might describe it as a hum or a whine, but the workshop still needs to check the source rather than diagnose it from that description alone.
If the inspection points to a bearing repair, choosing the right parts comes next. Whether that repair is suitable depends on what the inspection finds. The availability of a kit does not mean it will solve every noise from the rear drive unit.
Why There May Be No Dashboard Warning
A new sound with no warning light can leave you wondering whether anything is actually wrong.
Volvo’s technical guidance on ERAD noise, published in 2023, describes a likely motor-bearing fault where rear noise increases with vehicle speed during electric driving. For that fault, Volvo says no fault codes are stored and no dashboard message appears.
The bulletin covers specific vehicle versions in the US and Canada. A workshop should check the current guidance for the individual car.
For owners, the practical point is simple: checking fault codes alone may not explain the noise.
The same bulletin identifies the ERAD sensor disc as a possible cause of abnormal noise while the car is stationary after driving. It also lists sound recordings to help technicians compare normal operation with the faults described.
What to Tell the Workshop
You do not need to know which part has failed before booking an appointment. Describe what you hear and what the car is doing at the time.
“There is a noise from the rear when I drive on electric power, and it gets louder as I speed up” is a useful starting point. Mention whether it changes when turning or slowing down, and whether it continues after you stop. Tell the workshop about any vibration, warning message or change in power as well.
Ask the technician to check other possible sources of rear noise, including the tires, wheel bearings and brakes, before agreeing to work on the ERAD.
It is also worth asking whether they were able to reproduce the sound. If they could not hear it during the inspection, explain the conditions in which you noticed it rather than assuming the problem has gone away.
Does the Whole Unit Need Replacing?
That is a fair question to ask when the estimate arrives. The answer should come from the inspection, not just the fact that the car makes a noise.
Ask which component is damaged and what the proposed repair will address. A bearing-and-seal kit will not fix a separate transmission fault. The workshop also needs to consider the condition of the other parts before recommending a repair.
If the recommendation is to replace the motor or a larger assembly, ask why a smaller repair would not be suitable. The estimate should set out the parts, labor and repair warranty. Check any existing vehicle warranty before approving the work.
ERAD repairs involve a high-voltage system and should be handled by a properly trained technician. If the noise comes with a serious warning or loss of drive, follow the car’s instructions and contact the workshop or roadside assistance before continuing.
