Polestar 4: The electric SUV that could challenge Tesla

Polestar 4

Polestar, the electric car brand owned by Volvo and Geely, has unveiled its latest model: the Polestar 4, a sleek SUV that aims to compete with the likes of the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E.

The Polestar 4 is the third model from the Swedish-Chinese brand, following the Polestar 1, a plug-in hybrid coupe with a limited production, and the Polestar 2, a fully electric sedan that was launched last year.

The Polestar 4 is based on the same platform as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, but it has a more distinctive and futuristic design, with a low roofline, a long hood, and a sloping rear end. The front grille is replaced by a smooth panel that houses sensors and cameras for driver assistance features. The headlights and taillights have a signature LED pattern that resembles a star.

The interior of the Polestar 4 is minimalist and elegant, with a large touchscreen that runs on Google’s Android Automotive OS. The dashboard and seats are made of recycled materials, such as plastic bottles and fishing nets. The car also has a panoramic glass roof that can be tinted electronically.

The Polestar 4 will be available in two versions: a single-motor variant with front-wheel drive and a dual-motor variant with all-wheel drive. The single-motor version will have a range of about 310 miles on a single charge, while the dual-motor version will have a range of about 280 miles. Both versions will have a fast-charging capability that can add up to 80% of battery power in 40 minutes.

The Polestar 4 will also have impressive performance, with a 0-60 mph time of less than five seconds for the dual-motor version and less than six seconds for the single-motor version. The car will also have an adaptive air suspension system that can adjust the ride height and stiffness according to the driving mode and road conditions.

The Polestar 4 will go on sale in Europe and North America in late 2023, with prices starting from $55,000 for the single-motor version and $65,000 for the dual-motor version. The car will also be available through a subscription service that includes insurance, maintenance and access to charging stations.

The Polestar 4 is part of the brand’s ambitious plan to launch one new model every year until 2025, with a focus on electric vehicles. The brand also aims to become carbon neutral by 2030 by reducing emissions across its entire value chain.

The Polestar 4 is a promising addition to the growing market of electric SUVs, which are expected to become more popular among consumers who want more space and versatility than sedans. The car offers a compelling combination of style, technology, and performance that could challenge Tesla’s market dominance.

The Polestar 4 also shows that Volvo and Geely are serious about investing in electric vehicles and creating a distinct identity for their sub-brand. Polestar is not just a spin-off of Volvo but a standalone company with its own vision and strategy for the future of mobility.
