Volkswagen has responded to customer feedback by improving the user experience in terms of functionality and climate comfort with the new MEB-based ID7. The Volkswagen ID7 includes a variety of features: the new Augmented reality Head-up display, a new infotainment system with a 15-inch touchscreen, optimized functionality and operation of the air conditioning, and digital sliders under the touch screen for adjusting sound and temperature.
The new climate concept with clever ventilation nozzles includes various features that improve climate and driving comfort. For example, the Volkswagen ID7 can identify when the driver approaches the car with the key and will begin cooling or heating the cabin on hot summer or chilly days even before the driver gets into the car.
Smart Air Vents control the airflow and the air dampers move dynamically to disperse air across broad parts of the cabin as rapidly as possible. If passengers are in the vehicle, the air can be directed directly to the body or indirectly ventilate the cabin. These capabilities are always available on the touchscreen of the new infotainment system and can be activated and saved separately for each user. Voice commands can be used to trigger special requests. "Hey Volkswagen, my hands are cold!" says the user, and the ID7 answers by activating the steering wheel heating function. Simultaneously, warm air is directed toward the hands.
Volkswagen highlighted the new level of intelligent solutions in the ID7 in a unique way at the CES show in Las Vegas. The camouflaged sedan features a digital design and a one-of-a-kind paint that interacts with the car's bodywork. It has 40 layers of paint, some of which are conductive and others of which are insulating. A total of 22 regions of the car's body can be controlled separately and electrified (electroluminescence) under the top layer of paint to light up. When this is linked to a sound system, the beat is displayed by lighting specific places.
The QR codes on the front and both sides of the helmet serve as a bridge between the physical and digital worlds. The entire camouflage extends the QR code motif by concealing the curves of the ID7's production-ready design.
The Volkswagen ID7 retains the familiar design DNA of the electric ID family in appearance. The sedan's notable features include an aerodynamic front portion and a long curved roofline, both of which reduce power consumption and increase range. Air intakes placed into the front bumper on either side direct airflow down the sides of the automobile and to the back. As a result, they produce an air curtain that dampens airflow along the car's sides. The roofline extends down to the tailgate and contributes to the ID7's unusually low wind resistance coefficient, which provides the car a range of up to 700 km (WLTP).
The Volkswagen ID7, like all other Volkswagen ID models, is built on the MEB platform, which was designed exclusively for electric vehicles. This platform's advantages include short front and rear overhangs and a long wheelbase (2.97 meters), allowing for a large interior and a luxury driving experience in the Volkswagen ID7.
Volkswagen is expanding the popular electric ID family with the new ID7 electric sedan to encompass the vast middle vehicle class. With the launch of the ID7, Volkswagen accelerates its electric model offensive, which serves as the foundation of the brand's ACCELERATE strategy. Volkswagen has already passed the first milestone in the electrification of its model portfolio. Since the first Volkswagen ID3 models were delivered to customers in September 2020, Volkswagen has delivered over 500,000 ID cars worldwide, over a year ahead of schedule despite continued supply chain challenges.
The Volkswagen ID7 will be the sixth model in the ID family, following the ID3, ID4, Volkswagen ID5 and ID6 (only in China), and the new Volkswagen ID Buzz. It will be Volkswagen's second global automobile built on the MEB platform, following the Volkswagen ID4. The electric car will be introduced in three major markets: China, Europe, and North America. The Volkswagen ID7 for the European market will be manufactured at Volkswagen's Emden plant, which already produces the ID4.
