4 Maintenance Tips for Diesel Engines

4 Maintenance Tips for Diesel Engines

There are many benefits of choosing diesel over gas engines, such as better fuel mileage. But these benefits come along with specific needs that a gas engine doesn't have. Use these tips to make sure your diesel engine is in top shape, and it'll last you a lifetime.

1. Change the Filters

The fuel filters on your diesel engine will wear out over time. It's important to be aware of the expiration, generally every 10 to 15,000 miles. This way, your engine will last a lot longer, and you'll avoid developing bigger issues down the line. Keep track of your mileage and set a reminder for yourself to change the filter once you've hit that distance.

2. Clean Regularly

A diesel engine must be kept clean if you want to avoid ruining it quickly. Stick to a maintenance schedule for cleaning the fuel, oil, and air, and don't hesitate to tackle issues when they arise. Replace anything broken, preferably with higher quality materials, such as Duramax products.

3. Get an Oil Change

Many drivers are tempted to overlook the "change oil" light when it turns on and let their car run on dirty oil for a long time before they get around to it. But changing a diesel engine's oil is essential to its maintenance and shouldn't be overlooked. Shoot to change your oil every 5,000 miles or so, depending on how much you drive and how heavy your cargo is.

4. Top Off Fluids

Engine coolant is something that should be checked on frequently, as an overheated engine can cause a lot of issues in a diesel vehicle. Coolant can also become acidic over time and can end up rotting any mechanisms around it if left too long.

Use these tips to keep your diesel engine running smoothly, and you'll be glad you spent the extra money on an engine that will last you a lifetime.
