The Ford Mustang GT4: A Race Car for the Masses

Ford Mustang GT4

If you've ever dreamed of racing a Ford Mustang on the track, check out the new Ford Mustang GT4. This is a race car that you can buy from Ford Performance and race in various series around the world, from the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge to the British GT Championship. It's based on the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse, the most track-focused version of the seventh-generation pony car, but with some serious upgrades to make it competitive and compliant with GT4 regulations.

What is GT4?

GT4 is a sports car racing category designed to be accessible and affordable for amateur and semi-professional drivers. GT4 cars are based on production models but with modifications to improve performance, safety, and reliability. GT4 cars are also balanced by a system of weight, power, and aerodynamics adjustments to ensure fair and close racing among different brands and models.

Some of the most popular GT4 cars include the Aston Martin Vantage, the Audi R8, the BMW M4, the Chevrolet Camaro, the McLaren 570S, the Mercedes-AMG GT, and the Porsche 718 Cayman. The Ford Mustang GT4 is one of the newest additions to the GT4 field and has already proven to be a strong contender.

What makes the Ford Mustang GT4 special?

The Ford Mustang GT4 was developed by Ford Performance and Multimatic Motorsports, the same partners that created the Ford GT supercar and its Le Mans-winning race car version. The Ford Mustang GT4 shares some of the DNA and technology of the Ford GT, such as the carbon-fiber body panels, the DSSV dampers, and the aerodynamics package.

The Ford Mustang GT4 is powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 engine that delivers 500 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a Holinger six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifters, which can handle the high torque and provide quick and smooth shifts. The Ford Mustang GT4 also features a Torsen limited-slip differential, Brembo brakes, Michelin tires, and an FIA-approved roll cage.

The Ford Mustang GT4 has a distinctive look that sets it apart from the road-going Mustang Dark Horse. The front fascia has a large splitter and dive planes to generate downforce and improve cooling. The hood has vents to release hot air and reduce lift. The rear wing is adjustable and optimized for different tracks and conditions. The side skirts, rear diffuser, and wheel arches are also designed to enhance aerodynamics and stability.

How much does the Ford Mustang GT4 cost?

The Ford Mustang GT4 is not cheap, but it's not outrageously expensive either. It costs $269,900 (about CAD 358,000 or EUR 228,000), which is comparable to other GT4 cars on the market. For comparison, the Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R costs $259,000, while the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport costs $239,000.

Of course, buying a race car is only part of the equation. You also need to factor in the costs of running and maintaining it, as well as entering races and hiring crew members. Depending on how often and where you race, you could spend anywhere from tens to hundreds of thousands per year on your racing hobby.

Is the Ford Mustang GT4 worth it?

If you have the passion and the budget for racing, then the Ford Mustang GT4 could be a great choice for you. It's a fast, reliable, and competitive race car that can take on some of the best sports cars in the world. It's also a way to join the rich heritage and legacy of Ford racing, which spans from NASCAR to Le Mans.

The Ford Mustang GT4 is not just a race car for professionals. It's a race car for enthusiasts who want to experience the thrill and challenge of motorsports. It's a race car that lets you unleash your inner driver and live out your fantasies on the track. It's a race car that makes you feel like a winner.
