Positioned Between Tiguan and Touareg, the Tayron Delivers What Volkswagen Promised
The 2025 Volkswagen Tayron enters the European SUV market as a new midsize option, sitting between the Tiguan and Touareg. But instead of coasting on name recognition, Volkswagen loaded the Tayron with hybrid technology, towing capacity, and a safety suite that helped it earn a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. This isn’t a refresh. It’s a ground-up execution designed to meet multiple use cases without compromise.
Model Overview: Designed for Practicality and Range
Volkswagen engineered the Tayron on the MQB evo platform, the same modular base used in the newest Tiguan and Passat. The result is a vehicle optimized for space, tech, and electrification. The Tayron comes in two seating configurations (five and seven seats), and Volkswagen claims luggage space of up to 885 liters behind the second row.
Volkswagen will offer seven total powertrains over the full rollout. At launch, four versions are available:
- 1.5 eTSI Mild Hybrid (110 kW / 150 hp)
- Plug-in Hybrid eHybrid (150 kW / 204 hp)
- Plug-in Hybrid eHybrid (200 kW / 272 hp)
- 2.0 TDI Diesel 4MOTION (142 kW / 193 hp)
These are all paired with automatic dual-clutch (DSG) transmissions. The mild hybrid is front-wheel drive. The diesel variant features standard all-wheel drive and a towing capacity of 2,500 kg (5,512 lbs).
Tayron Plug-in Hybrids: Fast Charging and Long Daily Range
The Tayron plug-in hybrids stand out in a segment crowded with short-range systems. Volkswagen quotes an electric-only range of up to 127 km (79 miles) under ideal conditions.
Key plug-in hybrid specs:
Variant | System Output | Battery (net) | AC Charging | DC Charging |
---|---|---|---|---|
eHybrid 150 kW | 204 hp | 19.7 kWh | Up to 11 kW | Up to 50 kW |
eHybrid 200 kW | 272 hp | 19.7 kWh | Up to 11 kW | Up to 50 kW |
DC charging speeds up to 50 kW place it ahead of many competitors. A 40 kW charge rate is more typical, based on real-world testing using DIN 70080 protocols.
Dimensions, Interior, and Passenger Space
Volkswagen designed the Tayron with families and towing users in mind. The exterior length is approximately 4.8 meters (189 inches), offering generous cabin room.
Interior features vary by trim but even base Life models include:
- 10-color ambient lighting
- Digital cockpit
- Three-zone climate control
- 32 cm (12.6-inch) infotainment display
- App-Connect Wireless (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto)
- Nine airbags standard
The rear seats can accommodate child seats with ISOFIX mounts on all outer rear and front passenger seats.
