DS Automobiles, the French luxury brand born in 2015 as a spin-off of Citroen, has unveiled its latest creation: the DS 9. This flagship sedan is the brand's third model, after the DS 7 Crossback and the DS 3 Crossback, and the first to be exclusively produced in China. The DS 9 aims to compete with other premium sedans in the executive car segment, such as the Audi A6, the BMW 5 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
The DS 9 is based on the EMP2 modular platform of Groupe PSA, which also underpins other models such as the Peugeot 508, the Citroen C5 X and the Dongfeng Fengshen A9. However, the DS 9 has a longer wheelbase of 2.89 meters (113.98 inches), which gives it a more spacious and comfortable interior. The exterior design of the DS 9 is inspired by the DS concept cars, such as the DS Divine and the DS Aero Sports Lounge, and features distinctive elements such as the DS Wings grille, the DS Active LED Vision headlights, and the Clous de Paris guilloche pattern on the hood.
The interior of the DS 9 is a showcase of French craftsmanship and elegance. That of the DS 7 Crossback largely inspires the dashboard and features a 12-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, a wireless charging pad, a night vision system, an active scan suspension, and a level 2 autonomous driving system. The seats are upholstered in leather or Alcantara and offer massage, heating, and ventilation functions. The rear passengers can enjoy generous legroom, USB sockets, and a central armrest with massage controls. Focal Electra provides a sound system comprising 14 speakers that deliver a high-quality audio experience.
The DS 9 also offers a high level of performance and efficiency thanks to its three powertrain options: a turbocharged gasoline engine with 225 horsepower, a plug-in hybrid system with 225 horsepower, and an electric range of up to 31 miles (50 kilometers), and a plug-in hybrid system with 360 horsepower and an electric range of up to 25 miles (40 kilometers). The plug-in hybrid systems use a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine combined with an 80-kilowatt electric motor and can be charged in less than two hours using a wallbox. The DS 9 also features an 8-speed automatic transmission and can be either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
The DS 9 is part of the Collection Esprit de Voyage, a series of limited editions that celebrate the spirit of travel and exploration. The collection consists of three models: DS 9 Rivoli, DS 9 Opera, and DS 9 Performance Line. Each one has a distinctive style and personality inspired by different aspects of French culture and heritage.
- The DS 9 Rivoli is named after the famous street in Paris, where the most prestigious fashion houses are located. It features a refined interior with leather seats, wood trim, and chrome accents. The exterior is painted pearl white, with black details and 19-inch alloy wheels.
- The DS 9 Opera is inspired by the world of opera and classical music. It has a sophisticated interior with nappa leather seats, an Alcantara headliner, and a Focal Electra sound system. The exterior is painted deep blue, with chrome details and 20-inch alloy wheels.
- The DS 9 Performance Line is the sportiest version of the collection. It has a dynamic interior with leather and Alcantara seats, carbon fiber trim, and a digital instrument cluster. The exterior is painted in black color, with red details and 20-inch alloy wheels.
The DS 9 is expected to go on sale in Europe in late 2023, with prices starting from around $54,000 (€48,000). It will also be available in China and other markets around the world.
The DS 9 is more than just a car. It is an expression of French luxury, innovation, and excellence. It is a car that invites you to travel and discover new horizons. It is a car that will make you feel special and proud. It is a car that will make you fall in love with France.
