All-New 2026 Subaru Outback: Trims, Features, Pricing, and Performance

2026 Subaru Outback

Subaru's Bestseller Enters Its Next Phase

The 2026 Subaru Outback arrives with a sharper look, better tech, and updated safety features. Subaru’s wagon-SUV hybrid retains its identity while adding just enough edge to stay competitive. It’s the first major update since 2020.

This overhaul signals Subaru's response to tightening competition from Toyota, Honda, and Ford, all pushing utility vehicles with better electrification and connectivity.

Key Upgrades to the 2026 Subaru Outback

Subaru’s update strategy is simple: address customer pain points, improve ruggedness, and boost tech without bloating the price.

Exterior

  • Bold new front fascia with a hexagonal grille and LED headlights.
  • Chunkier cladding around wheel arches for improved visual strength.
  • New wheel designs across all trims.
  • Updated rear bumper and reflectors for a sharper rear profile.

Interior

  • Upgraded materials for better touchpoints.
  • 11.6-inch touchscreen standard on all trims with improved responsiveness.
  • Better voice recognition and support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Mechanical and Chassis

  • Two engine options remain:
    • 2.5-liter naturally aspirated flat-four (182 hp).
    • 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four (260 hp).
  • Lineartronic CVT standard.
  • Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive standard.
  • 8.7 inches of ground clearance.
  • X-Mode off-road system optimized for snow, dirt, and mud.

Safety and Driver Assistance Technology

  • Updated EyeSight Driver Assist Technology with wider field-of-view cameras.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking is quicker and more accurate.
  • Lane Centering Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control standard on most trims.
  • Optional DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System on higher trims.

Technology: Focus on Simplicity and Utility

  • Wireless charging now standard on higher trims.
  • Over-the-air updates for navigation and infotainment.
  • Subaru Starlink app allows remote start, locate, and unlock functions.
  • Navigation includes real-time traffic and weather data on select trims.

Fuel Economy

  • 2.5L: ~26 mpg city / 32 mpg highway / 28 mpg combined.
  • 2.4L Turbo: ~23 mpg city / 30 mpg highway / 26 mpg combined.

These figures beat most mid-size crossovers when paired with standard AWD and elevated ground clearance.

  • Upgraded shocks and springs.
  • All-terrain tires on matte-black wheels.
  • Standard front skid plate.
  • Enhanced roof rack with 700-lb static load rating.

Subaru’s Electrification Strategy: Still Waiting

No hybrid or electric variant of the 2026 Outback is available. Subaru continues to lag behind rivals here.

Toyota and Honda both offer hybrid powertrains across most trims. Subaru has not confirmed future electrification plans for the Outback.

Who Buys the Outback?

  • Practical, utility-first drivers.
  • Often live in regions with snow or mixed terrain.
  • Prioritize safety and reliability.
  • Less concerned with electrification for now.

Loyalty rates remain among the highest in the industry, especially for Outback buyers.

Final Take: 2026 Outback Keeps Its Lead—For Now

The 2026 Subaru Outback keeps what works: standard AWD, high ground clearance, and solid safety tech.

What stands out:

  • More refined looks.
  • Improved safety suite.
  • Better interior tech.
  • Competitive pricing.

What’s missing:

  • No electrified variant.
  • CVT still the only transmission option.
  • Limited towing capacity (3,500 lbs max on turbo models).

For buyers needing a practical, all-weather utility vehicle, the Outback remains a leading choice.
