Opel is launching another chapter of the Opel brand with the all-new Astra: the compact German is available in an electrified version for the first time.
The new Opel Astra plug-in hybrid was conceived and developed in Germany, and it will be manufactured there as well. The new Opel Astra is built on the third generation of the EMP2 multi-energy platform. The car, which was first shown as a 5-door hatchback, has a length of 4374 mm and a width of 1860 mm. Despite a 13 mm longer wheelbase of 2675 mm, the Opel Astra is only 4 mm longer than its predecessor due to a shorter front overhang. It seats five people, including the driver, and has a trunk capacity of 422 liters.
An Opel must be in good working order. It's referred to as "Autobahnproof" in Opel jargon. The engineers prioritized accurate steering and torsional rigidity, directional stability in curves and straight stretches, and solid braking qualities. This is accomplished, among other things, by installing a McPherson wheel suspension in the front and a torsion bar in the back, which guarantees horizontal stability. Furthermore, the chassis is 14% firmer than its predecessor.
