GR-FOUR

Toyota introduces targeted changes on the 2026 Toyota GR Corolla. Engineers stiffen the body, optimize intake cooling, and expand supply. A factory software upgrade boosts torque for early owners and updates GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive modes. The Corolla price in Japan remains constant, and orders begin on November 3.

What changed for 2026

Toyota applies race-proven methods to production cars. The focus is predictable grip, stable engine output, and consistent lap performance.

  • Structural adhesive increased to 32.7 meters in key body areas for higher rigidity.
  • A new cool air duct stabilizes intake temperatures under load.
  • The optional JBL Premium Sound package adds a subwoofer and updated Active Sound Control.
  • Japan supply expands; the lottery system ends.
  • Orders open November 3 at Japanese dealers.

Powertrain and driveline

Toyota keeps the proven 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. Output remains 300 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque in the evolved specification. Buyers can choose a six-speed manual transmission or the 8-speed GR-DAT automatic. GR-FOUR all-wheel drive remains standard.

  • Engine: G16E-GTS 1.6L turbo, direct injection.
  • Transmissions: 6MT or 8-speed GR-DAT.
  • Driveline: GR-FOUR AWD with selectable torque splits.
  • Performance: 300 hp, 400 Nm.

Owner upgrade program

Toyota will support 2023 GR Corolla owners with a factory upgrade that includes a torque boost and revised AWD control. Rollout begins in spring 2026 in Japan.

What the update delivers:

  1. Torque increase from 370 Nm to 400 Nm.
  2. AWD changes:
    • REAR mode replaced by a 50:50 GRAVEL mode.
    • TRACK mode becomes variable, shifting between 60:40 and 30:70.
  3. Available for 2023 GR Corolla units only.
  4. Rollout begins March–May 2026 in Japan.

Body and cooling improvements

Structural reinforcement

Toyota extends adhesive use by 13.9 meters over the prior model, strengthening the front structure, floor, and rear wheel housings. This increases torsional rigidity with minimal weight gain.

Impact for drivers:

  • Sharper response under sustained lateral load.
  • More accurate suspension geometry control over curbs.
  • Greater platform stability for aggressive driving.

Intake air management

A new high-RPM-activated duct channels outside air to the secondary intake. The design lowers intake temperatures during extended hard driving, improving consistency in power delivery.

Cabin and audio package

Cars equipped with JBL Premium Sound now feature a luggage-area subwoofer. Updated Active Sound Control offers three patterns and adjustable volume, with the system defaulting to off. Toyota also added synthesized lift-off burble capability.

Pricing and availability in Japan

Toyota keeps pricing unchanged for the Japanese market. Approximate USD equivalents are included for context.

Trim (Japan)TransmissionMSRP (JPY)Approx. USD
RZ6MT¥5,680,000$38,500
RZ8-speed GR-DAT¥5,980,000$40,600

Orders are open now, with first deliveries scheduled for November. Expanded production capacity is expected to reduce wait times.

Production and supply outlook

Toyota ends the lottery system and increases availability for Japanese buyers. Reports suggest capacity expansion includes a new line in the UK, expected at Burnaston, targeting mid-2026.

This means:

  • Shorter waiting periods.
  • Stable pricing despite increased supply.
  • Identical specifications across transmissions in Japan.

Market positioning

The Toyota GR Corolla competes against the Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf R. Toyota distinguishes itself with AWD, a manual gearbox option, and now a software upgrade program for early buyers. That mix strengthens long-term owner value and broadens appeal to track-focused drivers.

Editor’s take

Toyota’s decision to improve body rigidity, cooling, and AWD logic—while offering a torque upgrade for early buyers—shows discipline in product development. The brand maintains performance consistency without chasing bigger numbers. Expanded supply and stable pricing reinforce the GR Corolla’s position as an accessible, track-ready hot hatch backed by factory engineering.
