A Strategic Addition to Citroën's Electrified Lineup

Citroën has opened orders for the C5 Aircross Plug-In Hybrid 195 Automatic, the latest addition to its electrified SUV portfolio. This model joins the Hybrid 145 and ë-C5 Aircross (with up to 520 km range) to complete a lineup that targets every mobility need, from urban commuters to long-distance drivers. A Long Range ë-C5 Aircross variant will follow soon.

Starting at around $42,900 (approx. €39,990), the C5 Aircross Plug-In Hybrid 195 targets the heart of the C-SUV market with more electric range, more power, and more intelligent hybrid technology than before.

Powertrain: Hybrid System With 195 HP and 86 km Electric Range

Citroën has focused on efficiency and practicality. The C5 Aircross Plug-In Hybrid 195 pairs a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 150 hp (110 kW) with a 92 kW (125 hp) electric motor. Together, they deliver a combined output of 195 hp (143 kW).

A 21 kWh battery, positioned under the floor for better weight distribution and handling, powers the electric motor. This setup enables:

  • 86 km (53 miles) of average electric range — 33% more than the previous C5 Aircross PHEV.
  • Over 100 km (62 miles) of electric range in urban driving.
  • Up to 135 km/h (84 mph) on electric power alone.

The electric motor is integrated into a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (eDCS), designed to maximize efficiency and deliver smooth shifts under mixed power.

Driving Modes: Tailored for Every Situation

Drivers can choose from three driving modes:

  1. Hybrid – Automatically manages both engines to minimize fuel consumption.
  2. Electric – Runs on battery power alone as long as charge allows.
  3. Sport – Combines both power sources for maximum performance with sharper throttle and steering response.

Charging: Fast and Simple Daily Operation

Daily usability is central to the new C5 Aircross Plug-In Hybrid 195. Thanks to the improved battery system, most urban drivers won't need to recharge every day.

Charging times are competitive:

  • 5h15 with a standard 3.7 kW onboard charger on a 7.4 kW wallbox.
  • 2h55 with the optional 7.4 kW onboard charger.

These times make overnight charging simple and predictable, even without fast-charging infrastructure.

Interior and Comfort: Focus on Daily Usability

Inside, the C5 Aircross Plug-In Hybrid 195 uses Citroën's C-Zen Lounge architecture. The design maximizes space and comfort for both driver and passengers. Materials and ergonomics prioritize quiet operation, with the cabin designed to complement the silent nature of electric driving.

The cabin experience is further enhanced by advanced driver assistance systems and intuitive digital interfaces, designed to reduce cognitive load and keep attention on the road.

Market Position: Targeting the Core of the C-SUV Segment

The C5 Aircross Plug-In Hybrid 195 positions itself at the core of the European C-SUV plug-in market, with an emphasis on real-world range, practical charging, and competitive pricing.

It competes with models like:

  • Peugeot 3008 Hybrid
  • Ford Kuga PHEV
  • Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid

But Citroën differentiates its SUV with:

  • Best-in-class electric range in urban conditions.
  • A simple and predictable charging experience.
  • Competitive pricing and financing, with monthly payments from $270 (approx. €249).

Financing and Ownership Costs

Citroën’s financing program (SimplyDrive) offers a clear structure for private buyers:

  • List price: ~$45,500 (approx. €42,990)
  • Promotional price: ~$42,900 (approx. €39,990)
  • Initial deposit: ~$10,770 (approx. €10,036)
  • Credit amount: ~$31,400 (approx. €29,225)
  • Monthly payment: ~$270 (approx. €249) for 35 months
  • Final balloon payment: ~$27,800 (approx. €25,575)

This structure keeps monthly costs low while providing flexibility at the end of the term — buyers can return, replace, or purchase the vehicle.

Charging Strategy: Designed for Real-World Use

Citroën designed the C5 Aircross Plug-In Hybrid 195 with everyday practicality in mind. Its over 100 km electric range in city driving covers most urban commutes and errands on a single charge. This minimizes reliance on public infrastructure and allows most owners to charge at home overnight.

With plug-in hybrids often criticized for their limited EV range, Citroën’s move to 21 kWh represents a significant investment in battery capacity. It also improves the vehicle's overall efficiency, reducing fuel consumption on longer journeys and slashing emissions in urban driving.

Why This Plug-In Hybrid Matters

The C5 Aircross Plug-In Hybrid 195 reflects Citroën's approach to electrification: build vehicles that work in daily life, not just on paper. By combining real electric range, straightforward charging, and a proven powertrain, it targets mainstream buyers who want a bridge between ICE and EV.

Key takeaways:

  • 33% longer electric range than the previous C5 Aircross PHEV.
  • Over 100 km EV range in urban driving, reducing charging frequency.
  • Competitive monthly payments with flexible end-of-term options.
  • 195 hp combined output for confident highway performance.

Final Thoughts: The Smart Transition SUV

The C5 Aircross Plug-In Hybrid 195 is Citroën’s most practical electrified SUV yet. It balances performance, range, cost, and usability in a package aimed squarely at mainstream drivers. For buyers not ready to go fully electric, this plug-in hybrid offers a longer EV range and lower running costs without compromising on performance or comfort.
