Renault 4 Price Drop: New B-SUV Value Leader Starts Under $31700

Renault just made a massive move in the European electric vehicle market. The French automaker slashed prices on the Renault 4 E-Tech, bringing the starting price for the 40 kWh version to approximately $31,633. This positioning changes the math for families looking at their first B-segment EV.

While the Renault 5 captured early headlines with its sporty aesthetics, the Renault 4 is the pragmatic choice. It offers more height, a longer wheelbase, and significantly better cargo flexibility. If the R5 is the fun weekend car, the R4 is the daily workhorse designed for grocery runs, school drop-offs, and weekend camping trips.

The Numbers Behind the Price Cut

The entry-level model now starts at approximately $31,633. This covers the 40 kWh battery variant which delivers a 312 km (194 miles) WLTP range. For drivers needing more legs, the 52 kWh version with 407 km (253 miles) of range now starts at approximately $34,006.

These price adjustments represent a drop of roughly $1,107. While that sounds modest, it moves the needle significantly in a segment where every dollar counts. Renault is clearly aiming to boost the Renault 4 order intake, which saw just under 200 units in Denmark during January.

Why the Renault 4 Wins on Utility

The Renault 4 sits on the same AmpR Small platform as its smaller sibling but stretches the dimensions where they matter. It is longer and taller, providing a much-needed 420-liter boot. That is a massive jump over the Renault 5 and puts it in direct competition with traditional subcompact SUVs.

Practicality defines the interior. The flat-folding passenger seat allows for hauling long items, a feature rarely seen in this segment. The low load sill—positioned just 61 cm (24 inches) from the ground—makes loading heavy gear easy on the back.

Pro-Tip: The V2L Advantage

The Renault 4 features bidirectional charging. This means the car can power external devices like an electric grill or a coffee maker using a V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) adapter. It effectively turns the car into a mobile power bank for outdoor activities.

Performance and Charging Specs

Renault offers two distinct powertrains. The base model features a 120 hp motor, while the larger battery version bumps output to 150 hp. Torque remains respectable at 245 Nm, ensuring snappy city performance.

Charging is handled via an 11 kW AC onboard charger or a DC rapid charger. The 52 kWh battery supports up to 100 kW DC charging, taking the battery from 15% to 80% in about 30 minutes. The smaller 40 kWh battery peaks at 80 kW DC but achieves a similar charging window due to its smaller size.

Definition: One-Pedal Driving

The Renault 4 includes a One-Pedal function. This allows the driver to decelerate to a complete stop simply by lifting off the accelerator. It maximizes regenerative braking and reduces wear on physical brake pads in stop-and-go traffic.

Built Local for Better Sustainability

Renault is doubling down on its ElectriCity complex in Northern France. The Renault 4 is assembled in Maubeuge, with motors coming from Cléon and battery packs from Douai.

This local approach is not just about logistics. Renault claims 75% of suppliers are within a 300-kilometer radius of the factory. This reduces the carbon footprint of production and supports regional manufacturing jobs. The vehicle itself is designed for a circular economy, supporting Renault's broader sustainability goals.

Technology and Safety Features

The cabin centers around the OpenR Link system with Google built-in. This means native Google Maps integration and access to apps via the Google Play store. It simplifies EV ownership by planning charging stops directly into the navigation route.

On the safety front, the R4 packs 26 driving aids. Key features include:

  • Active Driver Assist: Level 2 autonomous driving for highways.
  • My Safety Switch: A physical button that allows drivers to activate their preferred ADAS settings instantly.
  • Rear Occupant Safe Exit: Prevents doors from opening if a vehicle or cyclist is approaching from behind.

What Now?

If you need a compact EV but found the Renault 5 too cramped for family life, the Renault 4 is the answer. The recent price drop makes it one of the most competitive B-SUVs in Europe.

Prospective buyers should visit a dealer during the national premiere events. With 5 years of warranty (up to 150,000 km) and 8 years on the battery, the long-term ownership costs look promising. This price cut suggests Renault is ready to fight for every percentage point of market share in the budget EV space.
