Toyota Corolla Hits 60 Years With a 2027 Special Edition

2027 Toyota Corolla Special Edition

Brand

  • Toyota

Sixty years and 57 million units. That production run puts the Toyota Corolla in a category by itself, and Toyota is marking the milestone with a 2027 Corolla 60th Anniversary Special Edition in the U.S. alongside a parallel set of anniversary trims across Europe. The name launched in Japan in 1966 as a compact built for an affordable, versatile ownership experience. Six decades later, the formula still works: reliable powertrains, low running costs and styling updates that track what buyers actually want.

The Production Record Behind the Milestone

Corolla now assembles at 12 locations globally and sells in 150 countries and regions, according to Toyota's European newsroom. In the U.S., gas-powered 2027 Corolla models come from Toyota Mississippi in Blue Springs, while Hybrid models arrive from the Takaoka Plant in Japan. Specifically, this dual-sourcing strategy lets Toyota balance North American demand against global hybrid capacity without straining either plant.

Corolla's European story runs on a similar timeline. Production started with the seventh-generation model at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey in 1994, then expanded to Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK in 1998. By comparison, the U.S. market has stuck with a single domestic gas-model plant for the current generation, concentrating manufacturing know-how in one facility rather than spreading it across borders.

2027 Corolla 60th Anniversary Special Edition: U.S. Specs

Toyota built the U.S. anniversary trim on the SE Hybrid grade and capped production at 2,500 units. That scarcity figure carries weight for resale math: a limited run this small, layered onto a nameplate with 57 million cumulative sales, tends to hold value better than a standard trim once the model year closes out.

The package swaps standard SE badging for 60th Anniversary exterior badges and adds 18-inch machined, black-finished alloy wheels. Inside, sport seats get Black and Red Sport Fabric inserts, while 60th Anniversary door sills and floor mats round out the cabin theme. Buyers choose between Ice Cap and Supersonic Red, the latter a first for the Corolla sedan lineup.

Base MSRP for the 2027 lineup starts at $23,325 for the LE grade, excluding the $1,295 dealer processing and handling fee. Toyota has not announced 60th Anniversary Special Edition pricing yet; that model arrives in early 2027, after the standard 2027 Corolla lands at dealerships this fall.

Powertrain Data: Gas, Hybrid and the Logic Behind the Numbers

The gas-powered 2027 Corolla runs a 2.0L Dynamic Force 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve engine with Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence, producing 169 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. Consequently, the LE grade posts a manufacturer-estimated 32 city/41 highway/35 combined MPG, numbers that reflect a naturally aspirated, direct-injection setup tuned for everyday commuting rather than outright output.

The Corolla Hybrid pairs a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with an electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission through Toyota Hybrid System 5, netting a combined 138 horsepower. Fuel economy climbs to 53 city/46 highway/50 combined MPG on Hybrid LE FWD and Hybrid XLE grades. Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive is available on Hybrid LE and Hybrid SE grades for buyers who need traction over peak efficiency.

European anniversary models run a fifth-generation hybrid system with two displacement options. Looking at the data, Hatchback and Touring Sports buyers choose between a 1.8-liter system rated at 140 DIN hp or a 2.0-liter variant at 178 DIN hp, while all Sedan versions use the 1.8-liter setup exclusively.

Market/TrimEngineOutputCombined Fuel Economy
U.S. Corolla LE (gas)2.0L Dynamic Force169 hp / 151 lb-ft35 MPG combined
U.S. Corolla Hybrid LE1.8L THS 5138 hp net50 MPG combined
EU 60th Anniversary Hatchback/Touring Sports1.8L hybrid140 DIN hpNot published in mpg
EU 60th Anniversary Hatchback/Touring Sports (sport)2.0L hybrid178 DIN hpNot published in mpg

Pro-Tip: If total cost of ownership drives your decision, run the math on the Hybrid LE FWD before comparing trims. Its 50 MPG combined rating against the LE gas model's 35 MPG combined translates to roughly 1,000 fewer gallons burned over 100,000 miles at that mileage gap, which offsets a meaningful chunk of the hybrid price premium over five years.

European 60th Anniversary Trims: Sedan, Hatchback and Touring Sports

Toyota's European anniversary package covers three body styles, each with a distinct paint execution. The Hatchback and Touring Sports get exclusive New Boreal Blue metallic paint in a bi-tone layout with a Night Sky Black roof and pillars, plus new 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels finished in a dual-tone matt and machined trim with chromed black wheel nuts. The Sedan runs a signature Lunar Sky Blue finish and adds a matt silver stripe along the boot lid edge, a detail not shared with its hatchback siblings.

All three share matt silver 60th Anniversary decals on the lower rear doors, scuff plates with the anniversary logo, and coordinating carpet mats. Buyers who prefer a more traditional palette can specify Platinum White Pearl or Ash Grey metallic instead of the anniversary-specific colors. European deliveries begin at the end of October, ahead of the U.S. special edition's early 2027 arrival.

Technology and Safety Across Both Markets

Every 2027 Corolla in the U.S. gets Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 as standard equipment, covering Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster comes standard on XSE and Hybrid XLE grades, while base trims run a 7-inch cluster.

European models pair a comparable T-Mate safety suite with Toyota Smart Connect+ multimedia on a 10.5-inch touchscreen, plus cloud-based navigation and over-the-air update delivery for safety and multimedia functions. The overlap between regions is deliberate: Toyota builds Corolla safety systems on a shared architecture, then adjusts feature naming and equipment tiers per market regulatory requirements.

What Buyers Should Do Next

Anyone chasing the U.S. 60th Anniversary Special Edition should contact a dealer before the fall launch window closes, given the 2,500-unit cap. European buyers can order now, with October delivery already confirmed. From an expert perspective, the anniversary trims serve less as a cosmetic package and more as proof that a 12-generation platform can still post double-digit MPG gains and full-suite driver assistance without losing the affordability that built the nameplate in the first place.
