New VW Tayron Plug-in Hybrid: 5-Star SUV with 7 Seats

VW Tayron Plug-in Hybrid

Positioned Between Tiguan and Touareg, the Tayron Delivers What Volkswagen Promised

The 2025 Volkswagen Tayron enters the European SUV market as a new midsize option, sitting between the Tiguan and Touareg. But instead of coasting on name recognition, Volkswagen loaded the Tayron with hybrid technology, towing capacity, and a safety suite that helped it earn a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. This isn’t a refresh. It’s a ground-up execution designed to meet multiple use cases without compromise.

Model Overview: Designed for Practicality and Range

Volkswagen engineered the Tayron on the MQB evo platform, the same modular base used in the newest Tiguan and Passat. The result is a vehicle optimized for space, tech, and electrification. The Tayron comes in two seating configurations (five and seven seats), and Volkswagen claims luggage space of up to 885 liters behind the second row.

Volkswagen will offer seven total powertrains over the full rollout. At launch, four versions are available:

  • 1.5 eTSI Mild Hybrid (110 kW / 150 hp)
  • Plug-in Hybrid eHybrid (150 kW / 204 hp)
  • Plug-in Hybrid eHybrid (200 kW / 272 hp)
  • 2.0 TDI Diesel 4MOTION (142 kW / 193 hp)

These are all paired with automatic dual-clutch (DSG) transmissions. The mild hybrid is front-wheel drive. The diesel variant features standard all-wheel drive and a towing capacity of 2,500 kg (5,512 lbs).

Tayron Plug-in Hybrids: Fast Charging and Long Daily Range

The Tayron plug-in hybrids stand out in a segment crowded with short-range systems. Volkswagen quotes an electric-only range of up to 127 km (79 miles) under ideal conditions.

Key plug-in hybrid specs:

VariantSystem OutputBattery (net)AC ChargingDC Charging
eHybrid 150 kW204 hp19.7 kWhUp to 11 kWUp to 50 kW
eHybrid 200 kW272 hp19.7 kWhUp to 11 kWUp to 50 kW

DC charging speeds up to 50 kW place it ahead of many competitors. A 40 kW charge rate is more typical, based on real-world testing using DIN 70080 protocols.

Dimensions, Interior, and Passenger Space

Volkswagen designed the Tayron with families and towing users in mind. The exterior length is approximately 4.8 meters (189 inches), offering generous cabin room.

Interior features vary by trim but even base Life models include:

  • 10-color ambient lighting
  • Digital cockpit
  • Three-zone climate control
  • 32 cm (12.6-inch) infotainment display
  • App-Connect Wireless (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto)
  • Nine airbags standard

The rear seats can accommodate child seats with ISOFIX mounts on all outer rear and front passenger seats.

Safety: Five-Star Euro NCAP Rating

The Tayron earned a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP in 2025. This rating covered all four categories: Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Vulnerable Road Users, and Safety Assist.

Standard safety features on the base Tayron include:

  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring)
  • Lane Assist and Side Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go
  • Exit Warning System
  • Front Cross Traffic Assist
  • Driver Alert System
  • Automatic Post-Collision Braking

This level of standard safety tech typically appears on higher trims in competing SUVs. Volkswagen’s strategy clearly focused on achieving top NCAP scores without optional packages.

Production: Wolfsburg Takes the Lead

Volkswagen launched Tayron production in November 2024 at its Wolfsburg plant, where it also builds the Golf, Tiguan, and Touran. The company confirmed that the Tayron's integration into Assembly Line 4 did not disrupt existing production schedules.

This made Wolfsburg one of the few plants in the world building four different volume models simultaneously.

Trim Levels and Pricing

At launch, the Tayron is offered in three trims:

  1. Life – Entry-level, well-equipped
  2. Elegance – Premium touches (available later)
  3. R-Line – Sport-oriented

The base Life trim includes:

  • LED headlights with Light Assist
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Illuminated VW logo front and rear
  • Rear sun blinds
  • Rearview camera
  • Park Assist Plus
  • Dynamic road sign display

European pricing starts at €45,475, which converts to approximately $49,600 USD at current exchange rates.

Optional Equipment: Charging Tech Meets Luxury

Buyers can add high-end tech and comfort upgrades, including:

  • DCC Pro adaptive chassis
  • IQ.LIGHT HD Matrix LED headlights
  • Travel Assist (semi-autonomous driving support)
  • 700-watt Harman Kardon sound system
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Leather seats with massage and ventilation
  • Voice assistant with ChatGPT integration

Volkswagen’s use of ChatGPT in the Discover infotainment system marks one of the first major OEM integrations of a large language model in production vehicles.

Market Position: Closing the Gap

Volkswagen's strategy is simple: plug the space between the Tiguan and Touareg without cannibalizing either. The Tiguan Allspace was the predecessor, but the Tayron brings a stronger feature set with lower emissions and better packaging. With up to 850 km (528 miles) total range for plug-in hybrids and 2.5-ton towing, the Tayron has the specs to justify its midsize SUV label.

Final Verdict

The 2025 Volkswagen Tayron arrives with a clear market role. It’s not a style play or a soft crossover. It’s a utility-focused SUV with a high safety rating, real electric range, and production-line maturity from Day 1. Volkswagen aims this SUV at families, long-distance drivers, and fleet customers who value range, safety, and towing—without jumping to full EV.

It won’t replace the Touareg. It doesn’t have to.
