Skoda Scala and Kamiq: The compact cars get a makeover

Skoda Scala and Kamiq: The compact cars get a makeover

Skoda has launched the production of the updated Scala and Kamiq models at its main plant in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic. The two compact cars have received a major facelift, with new design features, equipment, and assistant systems. They also boast a higher use of sustainable materials, reflecting Skoda’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Now, we will look closer at what makes Skoda Scala and Skoda Kamiq stand out in their respective segments and how they compare to their competitors.

The success story of the Scala and Kamiq

The Scala and Kamiq are two of Skoda’s most popular models, especially in Europe. Since their introduction in 2019, they have sold over 837,000 units combined, with the Kamiq being the brand’s best-selling SUV. Both models have also won several awards and accolades, such as the Red Dot Design Award, the Family Car of the Year, and the Best Import SUV below $34,000.

The Skoda Scala is a compact hatchback that offers a spacious interior, a large boot, and high connectivity and safety. It competes with other models such as the Volkswagen Golf, the Ford Focus, and the Hyundai i30. The Kamiq is a city SUV that combines the agility and practicality of a small car with the robustness and comfort of an SUV. It rivals other models such as the Nissan Juke, the Renault Captur, and the Peugeot 2008.

The new features of the updated Scala and Kamiq

Skoda has given the Scala and Kamiq a comprehensive makeover with the aim of making them more attractive, modern, and efficient. Some of the new features include:

  • Matrix-LED headlights: Both models can now be equipped with Matrix-LED headlights, which provide better visibility and safety. The headlights can automatically adjust the light beam according to the traffic situation, avoiding dazzling other drivers. They also have dynamic indicators and cornering lights.
  • New front and rear bumpers: The front and rear bumpers have been redesigned to give the models a more distinctive and dynamic look. The Scala has a sportier appearance, while the Kamiq has a more rugged SUV character. The radiator grilles have also been modified, with a new honeycomb pattern for the Scala and a new chrome frame for the Kamiq.
  • New rims and colors: Both models offer new options for rims and colors. The Scala can now be fitted with 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and the Kamiq with 17- or 18-inch ones. The Scala also has two new metallic colors: Brilliant Silver and Race Blue. The Kamiq has three new metallic colors: Brilliant Silver, Race Blue, and Quartz Grey.
  • New Skoda logotype: The fifth door of both models now proudly displays the new Skoda logotype, which was introduced in 2023. The logotype consists of the word “Skoda” in a modern and elegant font, without the previous green winged arrow. The logotype reflects Skoda’s new brand identity, which focuses on simplicity, human touch, and sustainability.
  • More sustainable materials: Skoda has increased the use of eco-friendly materials in both models, such as recycled PET bottles, organic cotton, and wool. The seat covers, floor mats, and dashboard are made of these materials, which reduce the environmental impact and enhance the comfort and quality of the interior.

The improved assistant systems and connectivity of the updated Scala and Kamiq

Skoda has also upgraded the assistant systems and connectivity of the Scala and Kamiq, making them more advanced and user-friendly. Some of the improved features include:

  • Travel Assist: This system combines several functions, such as adaptive cruise control, lane assist, traffic sign recognition, and emergency assist. It can automatically adjust the speed and distance to the vehicle in front, keep the car in the lane, and warn the driver of speed limits and traffic hazards. It can also detect if the driver is not holding the steering wheel or is incapacitated and take appropriate actions, such as braking or calling for help.
  • Side Assist: This system monitors the blind spots and the rear traffic and alerts the driver of any vehicles approaching from behind or from the side. It can also intervene by steering or braking if a collision is imminent.
  • Rear Traffic Alert: This system helps the driver when reversing out of a parking space or a driveway by detecting cross traffic and warning the driver or braking if necessary.
  • Park Assist: This system assists the driver when parking by automatically steering the car into or out of a parking spot. It can also measure the size of the parking space and suggest the best way to park.
  • Infotainment system: Both models have a state-of-the-art infotainment system, with a touchscreen display ranging from 6.5 to 9.2 inches. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and online services such as navigation, weather, news, and music streaming. Voice commands or gestures can also control the system and can be personalized with different profiles and settings.
  • Virtual cockpit: Both models can be equipped with a virtual cockpit, which replaces the traditional instrument cluster with a 10.25-inch digital display. The display can show various information, such as speed, rpm, fuel level, navigation, media, phone, and driver assistance. The display can also be customized with different layouts and colors according to the driver’s preference.

The comparison of the updated Scala and Kamiq with their competitors

The updated Scala and Kamiq have a lot to offer in terms of design, equipment, and technology. But how do they compare with their competitors in the compact car segment? Here are some key points of comparison:

  • Price: The Scala and Kamiq have a competitive price, starting from $19,000 and $21,000 respectively. This is lower than some of their rivals, such as the Volkswagen Golf ($24,000), the Ford Focus ($20,000), the Nissan Juke ($23,000), and the Peugeot 2008 ($24,000).
  • Space: The Scala and Kamiq have a generous amount of space, both for passengers and luggage. The Scala has a boot capacity of 467 liters, which can be expanded to 1,410 liters by folding the rear seats. The Kamiq has a boot capacity of 400 liters, which can be increased to 1,395 liters. Both models also have a lot of legroom and headroom, especially in the rear seats.
  • Performance: The Scala and Kamiq have a range of engines to choose from, including petrol, diesel, and natural gas. The petrol engines range from 1.0 to 1.5 liters, with power outputs from 95 to 150 hp. The diesel engines are 1.6 liters, with 115 hp. The natural gas engine is 1.0 liter, with 90 hp. All engines are turbocharged and have a start-stop system, which improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. The engines can be paired with either a manual or an automatic transmission, and some models have a mild hybrid system, which recovers energy during braking and coasting.
  • Safety: The Scala and Kamiq have a high level of safety, with a five-star rating from Euro NCAP. They have several standard and optional features, such as airbags, ABS, ESC, hill hold control, tire pressure monitoring, and Isofix. They also have advanced driver assistance systems, such as front assist, emergency brake, and lane assist.
