New Renault Duster Revealed: Full Hybrid Specs and Market Launch

Renault Duster

Renault defined the compact SUV segment in India when it launched the original Duster in 2012. After a hiatus, the brand is returning to its roots. The new Renault Duster arrives in spring 2026. This is not a refresh. It is a complete overhaul built on the Renault Group modular platform. Renault aims to reclaim its position in a market where SUVs now command a 55% share of passenger car sales.

Powertrain and Performance Data

Renault is aggressive with the technical rollout. The flagship is the full hybrid E-Tech 160. This system uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. It produces 160 hp and uses an intelligent multimode gearbox with 15 ratios. This setup allows for up to 80% electric driving in city environments.

For the entry-level market, the Turbo TCe 100 offers a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine. It produces 100 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque. It comes exclusively with a six-speed manual. The mid-range Turbo TCe 160 uses a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine. This unit generates 160 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Technical Specifications and Dimensions

The ground clearance stands at 8.3 inches. This is competitive for the segment and critical for Indian road conditions. The vehicle measures 171 inches in length with a 104.6-inch wheelbase. These dimensions maximize interior volume while maintaining a footprint suitable for urban navigation.

SpecificationData
Approach Angle25.7 Degrees
Departure Angle29.2 Degrees
Boot Capacity18.3 Cubic Feet
Total Storage1.16 Cubic Feet (Interior)
Wheel Options17-inch or 18-inch Alloy

Interior Technology and UX Design

The cabin features a 10.1-inch central touchscreen. This is one of the largest in its class. Renault integrated Google Automotive Services directly into the hardware. Drivers access Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store without a phone connection. A future update will replace the standard assistant with Google Gemini for conversational AI tasks.

Materials show a clear shift toward higher perceived quality. The dashboard uses a one-piece horizontal design with an OpenR twin-screen display. The digital instrument cluster measures up to 10.25 inches. Higher trims include power-adjustable ventilated seats and a panoramic sunroof.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Renault is equipping the Duster with 17 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). This is a first for the model. The suite includes Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Keeping Assist, and Automatic Emergency Braking. A 360-degree camera system provides a 3D dynamic view on the central screen. These features target the high safety expectations of modern Indian buyers.

Market Positioning and Pricing

The compact SUV segment accounted for 14% of passenger car sales in 2025. Renault will produce the vehicle at its Chennai plant. This facility is now 100% owned by Renault Group. While official pricing is pending, market analysis suggests a starting point near $14,500 (approx. ₹12 lakh) for the base TCe 100. The flagship E-Tech 160 hybrid could reach $24,000 (approx. ₹20 lakh).

Competitive Landscape and Comparison

The Duster competes in a crowded field. Its primary rivals include the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. Renault relies on its rugged heritage and the new hybrid powertrain to differentiate the product.

Manufacturing Strategy

Renault invested $3.2 billion into its global strategic plan. India is a primary hub. The Renault Design Center Chennai opened in August 2025 to adapt global products for local needs. The Duster is the first of eight new models planned for international markets under this strategy.
