How to Start a Car Detailing Business From a Mobile Setup

How to Start a Car Detailing Business From a Mobile Setup

To start a car detailing business, decide between mobile service and a fixed shop, register the business and check your local rules, insure it, buy the core equipment, build a few clear service packages, set up booking and payments, and market locally with before and after photos. Most new detailers start mobile, because it needs the least money up front.

A detailing business can start small and grow one customer at a time. The skills are learnable, the equipment fits in a van or a pickup, and happy customers come back every few months. The parts people underestimate are the rules about water, the right insurance and the systems that turn one-off details into repeat work.

Mobile detailing or a shop

The first decision shapes everything else. The table compares the two models on the factors that matter when you start.

Best forStarting lean, residential and fleet workPaint correction, coatings and higher volume

Many detailers start mobile, build a customer base, and add a small shop later for coatings and paint correction, which need a clean, controlled space.

Register the business and check local rules

Register a business name and choose a structure, usually a sole proprietorship or LLC. The U.S. Small Business Administration explains how to register your business with your state, and how to find the licenses and permits your city and county require. Get a federal EIN and open a separate bank account from the start.

Then check the rule most new mobile detailers miss, which is about wash water. Many cities prohibit wash water with soap, oil and grime from entering storm drains, because storm drains often flow straight to creeks and lakes. Mobile detailers handle this with containment mats and water recovery, waterless or rinseless wash methods, or by working where wash water can drain to a sanitary sewer. Ask your city's stormwater office what it requires before you buy equipment.

Insurance for a car detailing business

General liability insurance covers injury or damage at the customer's property, such as a chemical spill on a driveway. Garage keepers insurance covers damage to the customers' vehicles while they are in your care, which general liability usually excludes, so it matters for a business that works on other people's cars every day. If you drive a dedicated van or truck, it needs a commercial auto policy. Many commercial and fleet clients will ask for a certificate of insurance before they book.

Equipment and supplies to start with

Buy for the services you will sell first, and upgrade as the work grows. A practical starting kit covers both interior and exterior work.

  • A pressure washer and foam cannon, plus a water tank and hose reel for mobile work.
  • A strong vacuum and a carpet and upholstery extractor for interiors.
  • A dual-action polisher with pads for paint enhancement.
  • Plenty of microfiber towels, wash mitts, wheel brushes and detailing brushes.
  • Interior cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, wheel cleaner, car shampoo, glass cleaner and a protectant or sealant.
  • A generator or inverter if you will not always have access to the customer's power.

Store chemicals securely in the vehicle and keep their labels, because some customers and commercial sites ask what products you use.

Services, packages and pricing

Keep the menu short. Three packages, such as an exterior detail, an interior detail and a full detail, cover most customers, with add-ons for pet hair, odor removal, engine bays and headlight restoration. Paint correction and ceramic coatings are higher-value services to add once you have the skill and a covered space.

Price by vehicle size and condition, not by the hour, so customers know the cost up front and a heavily soiled SUV pays more than a clean sedan. Then build repeat business with maintenance plans, so a customer who gets a full detail can return every few weeks or months for a maintenance wash at a lower price. Those plans turn a busy season into a steady schedule.

Booking, deposits and repeat customers

Online booking with a deposit cuts no-shows, which hurt a mobile detailer more than most businesses because each slot includes travel time. Send a reminder the day before with what the customer needs to provide, such as access to water, power or a parking spot.

After the job, send the invoice from your phone, take payment on the spot and ask for a review while the customer is admiring the car. Then schedule the next maintenance visit. Many detailers run bookings, deposits, reminders and repeat visits from an auto detailing CRM, so each customer's vehicle, past services and next visit date are in one place.

Finding your first customers

Set up a Google Business Profile with your service area, hours and photos, because people search for detailing near them and choose from the map results. Post before and after photos of every job, and ask every early customer for a review.

Look beyond retail customers too. Car dealerships, rental agencies, property managers and companies with vehicle fleets need regular cleaning and pay on account. As the business grows, a website with clear packages and a booking link turns searches into jobs, and the same local search basics that work for any trade apply to detailing, which is the core of marketing for local service businesses.

FAQ

Do you need to be certified to detail cars?

Most places require only a business license, not a detailing certification. Voluntary certifications from industry groups and product training help you learn techniques such as paint correction and can reassure customers, but they are not usually required by law.

How much do detailers make per car?

It depends on the package, the vehicle size and condition, your local market and how much travel each job involves. Full details and coatings bring in much more per car than maintenance washes, while maintenance plans bring steady repeat revenue.

Is a car detailing business a good side hustle?

Yes, many detailers start on weekends with a small mobile setup. Keep it legal from the start with a business license, insurance and a plan for wash water, and build repeat customers before you go full time.
