The new Opel Astra wins Golden Steering Wheel award

The new Opel Astra, a highly praised compact model produced by the German automaker, was honored with the prestigious 2022 Golden Steering Wheel Award. Experts and readers of AUTO BILD and BILD am SONNTAG have approved the new Astra. One of the most prestigious awards in the auto industry went to Opel's new best-selling model in the compact class. Each new model from Opel, one of the most well-known automakers in the world, is met with critical acclaim and numerous honors. The latest Opel Astra model follows in the same footsteps as its predecessors. For the third year, the German automaker took home the Golden Steering Wheel Award for their innovative new Astra. In 2020, the Opel Corsa-e deservedly won this title, but in 2019, it went to the Opel Mokka-e. The 20th "Golden Steering Wheel" award was presented to Opel, making it the final honor bestowed on the company this year.

At the 2022 Golden Steering Wheel ceremony, Opel CEO Florian Huettl began his assessment by saying, "We hit the target with the new Opel Astra." He explained, "Our new small model is convincing and arouses interest on the other side." The new Astra has shifted the balance in the compact class, with many of the attributes needed to be successful in this market," remarked Tom Drechsler, chief automotive editor for the BILD Group. For the 20th time this year, the German manufacturer received the award from the Axel Springer publication BILD am SONNTAG (in collaboration with AUTO BILD since 2009). When deciding who gets the Golden Wheel, the opinions of AUTO BILD and BILD am SONNTAG readers always matter the most. By popular vote, they select three vehicles from each class to advance to the championship round.

The finalists are then put through an examination of the AUTO BILD test criteria by a jury of journalists, racing drivers, and auto experts at the DEKRA Lausitzring race track in Germany.
