90 Years of Škoda Superb: What Keeps This Spacious Sedan Relevant Today

Škoda Superb

In 1934, Škoda Auto launched a model that would define its upper-range offering for decades to come. It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t exotic. But the Škoda Superb earned its name not through hype, but through consistent refinement and practical performance.

Ninety years later, the Superb remains Škoda’s flagship, now competing in a very different car market. Yet, the core priorities haven’t changed: space, utility, value, and understated design. That formula still works.

Let’s look at how the Superb started, how it has changed, and why it's still relevant in a market saturated with crossovers and SUVs.

A Look Back: 1934 and the First Škoda Superb

The first car to carry the Superb name rolled off production lines in 1934. Back then, Škoda was one of Europe’s largest industrial conglomerates, not just a carmaker.

The original Superb was a six-cylinder sedan aimed at government officials, executives, and professionals. Its key selling points?

  • Spacious interior
  • Advanced suspension
  • Rear-wheel drive layout
  • Robust steel chassis

In 1938, Škoda introduced a version with four-wheel drive, developed with the Czech Army in mind. That early adoption of all-wheel capability was unusual for its time and hinted at Škoda's practical, engineering-first mindset.

Between 1934 and 1949, over 2,400 units of the original Superb were produced across multiple variants. Production ended due to post-war restructuring and the nationalization of Czechoslovak industry.

Rebirth in 2001: The Modern Superb Emerges

The modern era of the Superb began in 2001, over 50 years after the last pre-war version. By then, Škoda had been under Volkswagen Group ownership for nearly a decade.

The 2001 Superb was built on an extended Volkswagen Passat platform. But it wasn’t a clone. Škoda added:

  • Longer wheelbase
  • Rear legroom typically reserved for executive cars
  • Simplified pricing and feature sets

It was aimed at fleet buyers, taxi operators, and private customers who needed affordable comfort and space. The car gained traction across Europe, especially in Germany and Eastern Europe, where reliability and cabin room mattered more than badges.

2024: The All-New Škoda Superb

The fifth-generation Superb debuted in late 2023, with production starting in 2024 at a new plant in Bratislava, Slovakia. Unlike before, production now shares the line with the Volkswagen Passat, allowing efficiencies without merging identities.

What’s new?

1. New Platform, Familiar Size

  • Still large: over 194 inches long
  • More efficient packaging for larger cabin and cargo volume
  • Aerodynamics improved for lower drag and better fuel economy

2. Powertrains

  • 1.5 TSI mild-hybrid (110 kW / 148 hp)
  • 2.0 TDI diesel (110 kW and 142 kW / 148 hp and 190 hp)
  • 2.0 TSI petrol (150 kW and 195 kW / 201 hp and 261 hp)
  • Plug-in hybrid (150 kW / 201 hp) with 62 miles electric range (WLTP)

All versions come with DSG transmissions. Top trims offer all-wheel drive.

3. Practical Tech Upgrades

  • 13-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • Smart Dials: rotary controllers with embedded displays
  • UWB (Ultra-Wideband) digital key support
  • Predictive adaptive cruise control
  • Ergonomic seats with ventilation and massage

Why the Superb Still Matters

1. Big Without Being Flashy

The Superb doesn’t chase styling trends. It keeps a low profile, both literally and figuratively.

2. Room for Adults, Luggage, and More

The rear legroom is better than many full-size luxury sedans. Boot capacity ranges from 625 to 690 liters in the hatch and 645 to 680 liters in the wagon.

That means:

  • Three adults can ride comfortably in the back.
  • Two full-size suitcases fit in the trunk.
  • Golf clubs? No problem.

3. Ideal for Fleets and Families

Fleet operators appreciate its low total cost of ownership. Families like the space, safety, and fuel economy.

Price and Value Comparison

Škoda Superb 2024 (starting price): $38,500

Here’s how it compares to similarly-sized rivals:

ModelStarting Price (USD)Boot CapacityPowertrain Options
Škoda Superb$38,500625–690 LPetrol, Diesel, Hybrid
VW Passat Variant$40,000690 LPetrol, Hybrid
Peugeot 508 SW$41,000530 LPetrol, Plug-in Hybrid
Mazda6 Wagon$37,500522 LPetrol

Verdict: The Superb offers more space per dollar than most rivals, without sacrificing modern tech.

Not Electric—Yet

Škoda has committed to full electrification by 2035. But the Superb remains combustion-based for now.

There’s a plug-in hybrid model, with a 25.7 kWh battery providing 62 miles electric-only range (WLTP). But Škoda hasn't released a fully electric Superb yet. The upcoming Škoda Elroq and Vision 7S SUV will likely get that treatment first.

90 Years of Staying Out of the Spotlight—on Purpose

The Superb has survived and thrived by doing a few key things very well:

  • Prioritizing cabin space
  • Offering practical engines and drivetrains
  • Keeping pricing realistic
  • Serving as a bridge between mid-size and executive classes

Unlike brands chasing performance badges or lifestyle marketing, Škoda sticks to function. That approach keeps the Superb popular with drivers who need real-world utility.

Conclusion: The Quiet Success of a Czech Workhorse

The Škoda Superb doesn’t generate headlines with lap times or celebrity endorsements. But it has something rarer: decades of functional engineering and customer trust.

At 90 years old, it’s still one of the best-value large cars on the road.

Top 5 Reasons Drivers Choose the Superb in 2024

  1. Class-leading rear legroom
  2. Affordable pricing vs rivals
  3. Efficient hybrid and diesel options
  4. Large boot capacity
  5. Simple, intuitive tech inside

Škoda didn’t reinvent the wheel with the new Superb. They just made it turn smoother, last longer, and carry more.

That’s the Superb formula. And it’s still working.
