10 Tips on How to Not Be Fooled When Buying a Used Car

10 Tips on How to Not Be Fooled When Buying a Used Car

When you decide it’s time to buy a used car, one of the things that is most likely to concern you is how to avoid getting scammed and ending up with a car that is not fit for purpose, and definitely not worth the money you paid for it.

It can be really challenging to get it right, but if you are aware of the classic warning signs to look out for it could help steer you away from the rogues and help you to end up with a used car that fits the bill.

One obvious tip to follow would be to go to a trusted used car dealer. If you search Quality used cars in San Marcos TX, for instance, you’ll get a good idea of how to shop with confidence for a vehicle.

In the meantime, here’s some great tips to help you avoid getting fooled when buying a used car.

Don’t rush in

You should always do your research and check out the reviews and typical prices of the make and model you are interested in. That way, you have a clear idea of what to look for when you start browsing.

Make sure you see the car in person

Don’t ever agree to buy, or send any money,  either over the phone or on the internet until you have physically seen the car and checked it is as described. Some scams involve “selling” the same car to multiple buyers by taking a deposit and disappearing afterward.

Take the car for a spin

Even if the car looks great you should still insist on taking it for a test drive before agreeing to buy. The drive can reveal so much about the car, how it drives, whether there are noises you don’t like the sound of, and anything else that could spell trouble.

Verify the identity of the vehicle

Some rogue sellers may have falsified the identity of the vehicle to try and hide the fact that it has been stolen. Check that the identification number on the vehicle is present and matches with the documentation.

Make sure the car's history checks out

Another important thing to do is to get a vehicle history report. This will tell you all about the car’s history, how many owners it has had, whether it is subject to a finance agreement, and if it has been in an accident. These are all things you need to know.

Don't succumb to pressure

If someone is trying to scam you they will often try to rush you into buying as quickly as possible. Take your time to check everything and be sure that you are happy to go ahead on your terms, without feeling pressured to complete the purchase.

Get a mechanic to check the vehicle

It is always wise to get someone independent, like a trusted mechanic, to check the car over on your behalf and confirm that it is roadworthy.

Choose a payment method that is safe

When the time comes to part with your cash you should avoid unusual payment methods at all costs. You want a secure and traceable payment method that gives you proof of purchase and even some backup if there’s a problem with the car.

Be wary of dubious selling locations

A common scam is to ask to meet you in a car park or at a curbside, rather than at their house or when a dealer is trying to pose as a private seller. A great way to avoid this problem is to buy a vehicle from a reputable used car dealer.

Trust your gut

We tend to have a good natural instinct for when something seems wrong. If your gut feeling is that something is not right with the deal, walk away. There’s always going to be another opportunity, and your instincts could save you from being scammed.

Follow these sensible suggestions and tips to help you find the perfect used car. Remember, a good way to avoid a world of problems would be to go to a used car dealer who has a reputation to preserve.
