How to Spot a Repaired Car Before You Buy It

How to Spot a Repaired Car Before You Buy It

Repaired cars aren’t necessarily a bad choice. That needs saying first, because plenty of buyers walk away from perfectly sound vehicles over a replaced fender, then go and buy something with a badly straightened rear rail because nobody mentioned it.

The point of inspecting for past damage is not to find a car that has never been touched. Those get rarer every year. The point is to know exactly what happened, judge whether it was done properly, and pay accordingly. A well repaired car at a fair price is a good buy. The same car at untouched money is not.

Here is what actually gives repairs away, roughly in the order you should look.

Put some light and distance between you and the car

Inspect in daylight, never under showroom spotlights and never in the rain. Water fills small dents and hides texture differences beautifully, which is why the trade likes selling cars on wet mornings.

Stand at the front corner and look down the whole side of the car at a shallow angle, with something straight in the background: a fence, a building edge, a lamp post. Reflections do the work for you. A repaired panel almost always throws a slight ripple or a break in that reflected line. Do it from both ends, both sides, then squat down and do it again at knee height.

At the same time, watch how the colour behaves as you move. Metallic and pearl paint changes brightness depending on the angle, and a blended repair often flops slightly differently to the panel next to it. Straight on it looks perfect. From forty five degrees, one door is a shade duller.

Keep an eye out for the panel gaps

The consistency you’d expect from an untouched car can only be achieved in a factory. Bodyshops, even the very good ones, are working to a tolerance, and often without the sophisticated machinery that’s used in modern car manufacturing plants.

Run your eye along the gap between the hood and the fenders, then the doors, then the trunk lid or tailgate. You are looking for a gap that is wider at one end than the other, or a gap on one side of the car that plainly differs from the mirror image on the other. Open and close each door and listen. A door that needs a shove, or that drops slightly on its hinge as it swings, has usually been off the car or is hanging on a repaired aperture.

Unveil the secrets hidden in the paint depth

A basic paint thickness gauge costs about as much as a tank of fuel and pays for itself on the first car. You need one number to make sense of the readings: A factory paint finish is at roughly 90 to 120 microns. Factory build also stays fairly consistent from panel to panel, and that consistency is the thing you are really testing.

A panel reading significantly higher than that, say in the region of 300 microns, has already been through a booth at least once, probably more. Take several readings per panel, not one, and compare the two front doors, the two rear quarters and the roof. You are hunting for inconsistency more than any single number, because colours and manufacturers vary.

If you do not have a gauge, a small fridge magnet wrapped in a cloth tells you a cruder version of the same story. It sticks confidently to steel with normal paint on it, and it gets vague or falls off where there is filler.

Overspray is the tell that never lies

Open the doors and study the jambs, the striker area, the edges under the weatherstrip and the painted metal behind the hinges. Factory paint here is uniform and slightly textured. Repair overspray shows up as a fine mist on rubber seals, on plastic clips, on wiring looms, on the underside of the hood, in the wheel arch liners, and on the black plastic window surrounds.

Peel back a section of door weatherstrip gently. If there is a colour edge, or a hard line where masking tape sat, that panel has been sprayed. Look inside the fuel filler flap too. It gets missed more often than any other spot.

Get underneath the trim

Lift the trunk carpet and pull out the spare wheel or the foam tool tray. You want to see the well itself: factory seam sealer laid in a repeating machine pattern, spot weld dimples in an even row, and consistent factory coating. Hand applied sealer looks like it was smoothed with a finger, because it was. Wrinkles or waves in the metal of the spare well are a serious sign, since that area crushes in a rear impact.

Do the same at the front. Open the hood and look along the inner wings and the slam panel for the same weld and sealer pattern, then check the bolt heads on the fenders and hinges. Factory bolts are painted over as part of the shell. If the paint on a bolt head is cracked, chipped, or shows the marks of a socket, that panel has been unbolted.

Glass tells you the timeline, and modern glass tells you more

Every piece of glass carries a manufacturer logo and a date code. Compare all of them. If four windows share a brand and a date within a few months of each other, and the windshield is a different brand from two years later, the windshield has been replaced.

On its own that means very little. Stone chips are ordinary and a replaced windshield is often just maintenance. It matters when it lines up with other findings on the same corner of the car, and it matters a great deal on anything built in the last decade, because the cameras behind the glass need recalibrating afterwards.

The money involved explains why this gets skipped. AAA’s 2023 research into ADAS repair costs found that the ADAS related share of a windshield glass replacement averaged 25.4 per cent of the bill, about $360, and that the windshield mounted camera sensor on its own runs $900 to $1,200.

Those are exactly the numbers that tempt somebody to have the glass swapped cheaply and quietly skip the calibration, which leaves lane keeping and automatic emergency braking reading the road slightly wrong.

While you are at the glass, check the moulding sits flat all the way round, look for a bead of adhesive squeezed out at the corners, and listen for wind noise on the test drive. A properly bonded screen is invisible and silent, and you can see what that process actually involves here.

Don’t be afraid to get your hands, and knees, dirty

You do not need a lift. A phone torch and a willingness to kneel is enough. Follow the chassis rails from front to back. You are looking for kinks, for fresh undercoat sprayed over a small area, for welds that do not match the ones elsewhere, and for clamp marks on the pinch welds along the sills.

That is not automatically a deal breaker. Modern structural repair, measured properly and pulled back to factory dimensions, is legitimate work. It just needs to be reflected in the price, and it needs to have been done by someone with the right equipment rather than someone with a chain and an optimistic attitude.

Take it for a spin

Drive it somewhere flat and briefly let the wheel go. A car that pulls, or that drives straight only with the steering wheel sitting off centre, has an alignment issue, and alignment issues on a previously damaged car often mean the structure was never quite right. Look at the tyres before you buy and after the drive. Uneven inner or outer wear on one corner says the same thing.

Finally, just ask. Ask what has been repaired and who did it. An honest seller with receipts from a proper facility is a much better prospect than a seller with a suspiciously clean story. Spend twenty minutes doing all of the above and you will know more about the car than the person selling it does. That is usually worth a few hundred off the asking price by itself.
