The most common reasons why people have trouble with their motor vehicles' batteries

The most common reasons why people have trouble with their motor vehicles' batteries

Truck, car, van, sport utility vehicle, and other motor vehicle batteries are used to provide the electricity that fuels spark plugs, which, in turn, cause fuel to combust and engines to put out energy. Without a battery, you won't be able to start your petrol-fueled - another word for gasoline - engine. Fortunately, most problems that drivers have with their rides' batteries are easily fixed. Here are some of the most common reasons why people have trouble with their motor vehicles' batteries.

Terminals Aren't Forming Solid Connections Due to Being Loose

Battery terminals are the positive and negative ports on top of car batteries. They must be connected to the rest of the vehicle by wires. These wires are meant to be held in place by clamps used for battery terminals. One of the easiest fixes for car battery terminals that don't form solid connections is to simply righten the terminals up to ensure a working connection.

Battery Terminals Can Also Corrode

When something corrodes, it is destroyed as the direct result of a chemical reaction. One of the most well-known, common instances of corrosion is when a motor vehicle with a lot of steel sits outside for an extended period of time. With metals, most corrosion takes the form of rust, which results from the oxidation process. Oxidation, if you didn't know, is the process by which something gives off one or more electrons to donors. A simple trick to cut down on battery corrosion is to use a Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, or a similar type of soda - including Pepsi and Royal Cola - to loosen oxidation and corrosion. Simply scrub with a towel or brush after pouring the acidic, caramel-colored cleaning aide on the terminals.

Not Being Used Enough

Without going into detail, sulfation is the process by which lead sulfate particles latch onto the inner workings of lead-acid batteries, the most common type of car battery. Too much sulfation can cause electrical conversion from taking place, rendering batteries useless. Having battery problems? Try to fix it yourself and risk further damage or get high-quality apopka auto repair from our professional staff.
